Open diffs on auto Liberty?

AFAIK the Liberty has open diffs, at least on my auto??

I found out the 'most interesting' way where my car was beached because I only had one front wheel of traction and it just spun... no rear wheel pushing it up...

I believe the front/back differential in manual Subarus is a verssion of the "Torsen Differential". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torsen

it is the rear diff which is a Torsen.

Let me try this again - it's more to do with the scenario.

It was raining, and I was trying to go up a steep driveway on an angle so that I wouldn't scrape. I think only one of my wheels were on the ground, I planted it and it wouldn't go. Being very frustrated, I REALLY stepped on it, and I could see that the left tyre was spinning and smoking it up (I know, it's fully sik bro!)

Why didn't the rear wheels push the car forward and out of this predicament?

because of the open diffs all the power went to the wheel that was spinning on latter models with the traction control the car would of applied the brakes to the spinning wheel to send the power to the other wheels

i dont know a lot about cars ,but if the front wheel is the only wheel on the ground with traction how do you expect the rear wheels to do anything while they are in the air??

Sorry - I meant one of my two fronts. The rears were still on the ground.

Don't know how I'd get into a road situation where I only had one wheel on the ground, whilst the car is stationary

Um... I don't know for sure... but I'd be surprised if you had open diffs front and rear. Limited Slip Diff (LSD) means just that... 'limited' slip... so if you get into extreme circumstances, you might exhaust the 'limit' to the slip control of the limited slip diff.

I think the torque distribution front to rear is also by a LSD in the auto... so it too has its limits.

Just like 4WDing off-road, you can have a 4WD with 3 x LSDs, front, centre and rear, and still get bogged with one front and one rear wheel spinning to their hearts content.... until you lock the centre diff... or the rear...

My research (as does BUDDAH's) shows that the auto is indeed 90/10 F/R bias - however if I force it in manual model, first and second gear will give me 50/50 proportioning.
