Removing of Changing Black Rubber Stripping on door

Postby elementz23 » Sun Sep 06, 2009 2:31 pm

Hey just wandering if anyone knows how to or has experience in either changing the color of the black stripping on the outside of the doors to match the car color?
always hated it and it detracts from the looks of the lib

Iv never had/looked closely the GEN3 libs. But i know the problem with colour coding black strips on alot of cars is that the plastic is very porous and the paint kind of "soaks in" and doesnt give a very good final product, very flat and looks different to the rest of the body. But like i said, it depends on the materials used for the strips i think. Obviously it can be done, as my GEN4 lib has plastic strips that are factory colour coded. Hopfully somebody can expand on this 8)

Can be done, I did it on my old car. Just needs to be primered, probably best to leave it with your panelbeater.

Looks HEAPS better after it's done.

Should be no more than $200. Any more and you can tell them to stick it. :P

While you're at it, see if there's anything else you need touched up or painted. i.e. maybe the side mirror corners? etc.

yep, it can be done.. had it done to exactly the same car... (1999 Subaru Liberty RX that was completely converted to RSK spec...)

They will usually do the following (depending on the panel beater):
- Take off the strips
- Prepare them by sanding it down with fine-grade sand paper
- Apply a primer to prevent the paint from running off the strips
- Sand it again and re-apply primer
- Paint with the desired colour

If you want a proper job, I think it's more trouble than it's worth, because you've got to get he holes sealed up then repaint the boot

Other choices are to put a lip spoiler than will cover off the holes, or else - swap with someone that has a rear boot without a spoiler (usually, Heritage owners don't have spoilers on their cars)

IMO, I think the spoiler looks nice on the Gen3s... looks a bit weird without it. If you want to change the look of the car... either a lip spoiler (I love my lip spoilers) or get a later Gen3 bar (I had mine swapped from your bar to the bar that is in the photo)
