New Yokohama AVS db2 tires

Postby gtspec » Wed Sep 02, 2009 10:32 pm

Hey Experts...
I just purchased a set of 225/40 ZR18 88 W Yokohama AVS dB S2 tires.. got them at a good price $250 each corner fitted and balanced..

Anyhow problem being when driving at speeds above 60km/h and i turn right and left (or vice versa) quickly (eg changing lanes) the back of the car feels delayed to pull back into driving line and feels like jelly for a moment..
when i tested it and turned sharp one way and straighten up again it was realllllllly bad swayyyy of the back of the car..

overall the car sticks to the ground like it should BUT the back is on jelly and wobbles.. no happy jane..

is this normal behaviour and just has to wear in?

im going back there tomorrow to take them for a drive.. just wanted to find out what others think?>??

also i checked the tire pressure is at 40psi at all 4 corners

cheers

Adam

Something sounds wrong. Also sounds like more than just tyres to me too. Check your wheel nuts before you take it anywhere - they may not be loose but with that sort of stability feeling I'd be checking everything, the wheel nuts would be the first and easiest to check.

Dont know the target market for these tyres, but if they are on the comfort side of sports tyres and designed for less road noise - its a good chance they are a soft sidewall tyre.

The feeling you describe sounds like lack of turn-in due to the increased slip angle sloppy sided tyres provide. Its great for soaking up bumps and you will still have good grip if the tyre face is designed that way, but lack of feel and response is a trade off for soft sidewalls.

I once tried Yokohama A520's when they first came out 10years ago as I was a fan of the even older A509s (showing my age now). Lucky I bought them from Bob Jane when they had a satifaction guarantee. I drove with them for 3 days on my TypeR Integra and took them back as the deadend turn-in jelly feel on slalom and overall lack of response just killed the exhillerating drive a Type R provides.

A set of Falken Azenis later and I was a happy man.

BUT - if its realllly as bad as you describe then check smythies suggestions and the wheel alignment as no tyre should be on the boarder of dangerous

hmm checking the wheels nuts is a good point.. i will do that first thing in the morning..

before my tires were changed (stock bridgestones) this jelly feel was NOT there at all.. if anything it had a great feel and response.. so im positive its these new tires that are causing it..

im hoping the wall of the tire is not that soft.. either case i have never ever felt a car with that bad of a sway when turning..

i will also get the wheel alignment checked but if it wasnt there with the old tires, why would it be a big problem now..

very unhappy :(

Once you have checked wheel nuts check your tyre pressures. The alignment should not have changed so dramatically just by putting new tyres on.

Lastly if nuts check out OK then it is either a charateristic of that tyre (soft sidewals), or they are not scrubbed in yet and so the back may feel a bit loose. Drive for another 400-500kms and they will scrub in and grip better.

What else did they do for you when you got the tyres done? Did they just do the tyres or did they do alignment while they were at it? It sounds like it's either the tyres or something they have touched.

Jim, he mentioned in his first post that he had checked his pressures - all 4 corners were 40 pounds

Also keep in mind that the old tyres could well feel a little more stable than newies of the same type as the tread blocks of the old worn tyres will be shorter and will flex less than the taller tread blocks of a new tyre.

that actually could be the case..

NO wheel alignment done.. just fit and balance is what i requested

ok wheel nuts are nice and tight and tire pressure is also fine... driving the car for another 400-500km might also help wear them in but still weird it would need that.. im going to have a chat to the guys at the tire shop today and see what they think.. (i knew i should of went the kumho KU26 :x )

From what he has described in the first post - it doesn't read like a 'green' tyre problem. Tyres do have a release agent still coated on them from new to allow them to be removed from the mould at manufacture. This makes them a bit slippery from new but coupla hundred kays and they are scrubbed in

However gtspec describes outright grip to be good - not something a 'green' tyre would exhibit

BINGOOOOOOOOOOOOOO tony..

took it back to the tire shop and they found the end links loose.. Strange how it happened after a tire change thou..

anyhow they said they were tightened and problem resolve.. it still sways a little in the rear when hooking it hard but nothing like before.. now it just feels like the tires need to run in..

so problem solved :)

thanks for all your input guys, much appreciated

Speak for yourself Steve I was quite adamant when I was in Thailand that I did NOT want happy endings!

thanks again guys, i noticed last night on the freeway the problem is still slightly there.. but no were near as bad as before..

i have put it down to changing from stock 215 45 18 to 225 40 18.. im assuming the wider tyre rolls a little on the rims.. anyone else have that happen?
