Wheel hum. Bearing?

Postby Woodduck » Wed Aug 05, 2009 10:55 pm

Ever since iv had my car its had a strange hum. I always figured it just had noisy tyres, as it slowly got worse and Subaru and Goodyear kept telling me i needed to get new tyres because mine were stuffed. I put 2 and 2 together and just figured it WAS my tyres. I finally got around to getting new tyres and the noise hadn't disappeared? Over the last week its got REALLY bad, and is worse when turning corners. Its now specifically coming from rear passenger wheel. It is honestly so loud, that if i have my Macintosh on 25+ volume settings i can STILL hear it. It is a solid hum but eventually gets up to a rythmic "vom vom vom vom vom" ( ). Iv got my car booked in next tuesday for its service anyway, and they are going to have a look at it then. But im just wondering, if anyone can tell me what it is. Im guessing wheel bearing, but not too sure. How much will it set me back to do the bearings if it is that?

How many km's has your car done?

It could be your wheel bearing as you said, check it by jacking up that wheel up in the air and trying to wobble the wheel back and forth and up and down (holding top and bottom of tyres with nuts still done up tight). If there is movement the wheel bearing could be shot. A busted wheel bearing can make all sorts of sounds, from metallic scraping to a drone.

It could also be your shocks on the way out. Can you see anything leaking from the shocker? Have you noticed bouncy or poor ride? This is why i asked how many km's your car has done.

Anyway good luck with it.

CV joints tend to be "thunk-thunk-thunk" rather than vom-vom-vom from my experience

Adhar, iv just hit 60,000ks. It shouldnt be the shocks, A: Its not dependent on bumps etc, its speed dependent and B: i Just had Tein springs fitted by subaru, so i would imagine they would pick up on a fooked shock? (just my guess though).

Ric, i did a CV in my VT, and it was a very different noise to this one. Its very rarly a vom vom vom vom even, its basically a flat droning hum. But as i said, occasionally it gets into a vom vom vom vom type of noise. I guess ill just havto wait untill tuesday :(

Might be a dumb statement, but are any of the calipers (well, pads) dragging on the discs?

I dont think so sent, Its been happening for ages, slowly getting worse (why i figured it was the tyres, as they wore more it got worse)...and when i took the pads off to paint my calipers the pads were all pretty good, id imagine if it was dragging it would be pretty buggered?

Might be - maybe look at the discs too. Is one worn considerably worse than the other?

Did you do what adhar said about 'rocking' the wheel?

+1 on the sound and "wheel bearing" being the issue.

Yeah the disc is fine. Havnt had a chance to get it up on a jack yet. Will do it tonight! I remember last week when painting my brakes my mate put the rear wheel on and said "can you please do this one tighter with the rattle gun, its still loose". Maybe this is why? Maybe it wasnt the nuts that were loose.

Per side  With a service it cost me $669.75. So it was about $400-$450 for the new hub installed.
