Brake painting

Ok so this week some time, or maybe this weekend im planning on painting my calipers. So my question is, what steps do i take?

My guess would be something like this-

-Remove wheel
-Clean brake caliper using??? (whats reccommended?) and a scrubbing brush of some sort?
-Cover brake disc using cardboard
-Tape up lines and everything that doesnt need to be painted
-Paint using a high temp paint

Should i use some kind of clear coat?


If others who have done this could tell me their method i would really appreciate it

Depends how fussy you are... and how mint a finish you want!?

I painted my calipers on my B4 in the way that you described... masked off everything that I didn't want painted... did a couple of coats of red... and that was it!

As far as I can tell, it still looks good(my dad's car now and he has the stocker BBS wheels back on)... Only thing is there was the odd tiny spot where some paint got through gaps in the masking... and if you examined the calipers you could probably find some small unpainted spots... but on the most part, it looked the goods and has lasted 3 years or so now!

Yeah that sounds fine to me. You dont have a fantastic veiw of them through the stock 3.0R B wheels anyway. So you didnt do clear coat or anything? It'd havto be high temp wouldnt it?

Hi,

I painted mine not long ago.

Remove caliper and tape of the important bits and anything you dont want painted.
Then wash them carefully with soap and water with a scotch brite sponge let them dry.
After that clean them with K&H Wax and Grease remover.
Once dry paint 3 coats with brake caliper paint let them dry.

I used two colours on my calipers red and silver.

if u've got your photo uploaded somewhere on the net which i'm guessing u dont, u'll have to do so... u can create an account to something like photobucket..... upload ur pics there, then u can grab the URL (link to photo)

when u post here simply insert the URL in image tags:

[img]URL[/img] (replace "URL" with ur link obviously...)

i painted mine the second day i had the car, but more for a 'protective' coat type thing and sprayed it silver....... looks dirty again... and i've only had the car for over a year..... maybe i used the wrong paint........

how do u get it looking shiny?

Nah I didn't clear coat or anything... just gave them a once over with some cleaner before painting, and then a couple of coats of red (proper hi-temp brake paint) and she was golden... wasn't a gloss finish, but looked plenty better than the stocker IMO...

If you want to have a look how they turn out here it is.

I have just taken a snap shot of the caliper and they are about 1 year old. Thats why I said to give them 3 coats if you could.

Also you can see how I painted the caliper in two different colours.

Also, you can upload photos directly to the board.
Just below where you type in your message, click on the "Upload attachment" tab.
Click "browse" (to the right of "Filename"), and select the photo from your hard drive, then click on "Open". (That just copies the full address of the file on your PC to the "Filename" box.)
Then click the "Add the file" button, and the file will be uploaded to the board.
You will then see the file listed below your message. If you click on "embed in post", it will then add an "embed" bbcode to your message, which will display as your photo when you post the message.

I'm in the process of doing a full refurb now involving tearing down the entire brakes, replacing the seals etc which is too far, but necessary given that they guy doing the sandblasting farked them up!

Thanks alot THERB3 that really helps! IF you dont mind, how do you remove the calipers? Its just something iv never done/had to do before haha. If its extreamly in depth dont worry about it, but if its easy could you please explain

BTW THERB3, your brakes look really good. Iv gone for a gold/silver/copper sort of colour...not really brembo colour, more copper. Hopfully it doest look like im trying to make my brakes look brembos...i didnt think about it untill i left the store haha.
