NEW laws making it an offence to raise or lower a car's suspension without proper approval is about saving lives, New South Wales Roads Minister Michael Daley says.

From August 1, car owners will be limited to raising or lowering their suspension by no more than five centimetres, and all modifications will need approval from Roads and Traffic Authority engineers.

Currently, a car can be raised or lowered by up to five centimetres without approval and by up to 15 centimetres with approval.

Mr Daley says while drivers may think a lowered car looks "cool" it really is dangerous and any adjustment of more than five centimetres doesn't belong on the road.

"I don't want to see young hoons putting their lives or the lives of others at risk, just because they think their car looks better 15 centimetres closer to the ground," Mr Daley said.

"Raising or lowering a vehicle's height can put the driver, passengers and other road users at risk.

"It can affect handling, braking and safety features such as electronic stability control."

Any vehicle that is raised or lowered after August 1 will have to carry a certificate stating that the modifications confirm to safety standard requirements.

While this is more for those idiots who drop their cars all the way to the floor and bounce out of control from the smallest hump, the number is so miniscule I can't imagine why this is needed. I'm sure it's more of a way to make money for the state. Just like the pink slip (in NSW) where it has to be certified by a mechanic/shop and costs you money, you'll have to get the lowering certified by a RTA approved engineer, also costing you money but making money for the engineer and the RTA.

But then again, I haven't seen a Liberty owner crazy assed enough to lower their car 50mm or beyond, which would warrant the certification.

Umm, according to this ALL modifications will require certification.

They are saying you can't go lower than 50mm max but it's still going to cost you to do it.

I thought you were allowed up to 5cm before needing certification. Looks like any sort of lowering will require a certifcate and you're allowed up to 5cm maximum.

Ok, that sux chunks then. I wonder if this will be retroactive? I hope they don't make those of us who are lowered already get certified.

also going to get a cert for your lowered car might open another large can of worms if you have any other modifications

Doesn't effect me, but it is rather annoying... Considering I wanted to lower Ze Beast 5 inches in the not too distant future.

This is more likely a knee jerk response by a state government so on the nose to all and sundry that the only way they can get any positive spin from the Telecrap is to
1 appeal to the "Laura Norder" woman gambit... get tough on crime (law and order..getit?)
2 Target Hoons
3 Target Lebs
note how this legislation kite, once flying appeals specifically to 2 and 3 while by the limited mental abilities of the average newspaper reader also dog whistles to number 1
If this unenforceable rubbish ever gets pased it will be used at best once every 6months down at Brighton on a friday night
Imagine coppers with a tape and a list of hieght measurements for every car sold................so much easier to target BOV and open air pods (NSW specific)

That is sooo true, & I totally agree with how are the cops supposed to know what the standard height is??
But then again they don't need TO KNOW just suspect, just like they only need to suspect your exhaust or stereo is to loud with out actually having a meter.
Because its up to you to prove your car is legal not them to prove your car is illegal
