Please forgive my ignorance, but what is the difference between the panel filter and a pod filter?

Cheers

A panel will replace the OEM filter in your airbox (it's a panel btw). A pod will require the removal of the airbox and in NSW, an enclosure around the pod to isolate it from the rest of the engine bay (not sure why, could be fear of fuel being back fired through the intake). The idea of the pod is to reduce intake restriction. Aftermarket panels are also sold on the premise of reduced restriction/improved air flow. Whether the OEM airbox and filter actually create much restriction in the first place has yet to be proven.

Many of the foam panels and pods are reuseable whereas the OEM paper panel is not really.

Improved air flow over the standand/OEM paper filter - better breathing is GOOD thing :D Works a treat in my 3.0R

On a stock setup, air flow increase is minimal to nil at best. It's mainly for the re-useability factor in that case. For people who have upgraded their exhaust, top mount, etc that air flow should be better and keep up better with the upgrades than a standard paper one.
