unhappy wife

Postby adam » Wed Apr 29, 2009 11:48 am

so, the missus is not totally happy with the exhaust upgrade :( and i'm probably best off trying to find some sort quietening solution rather than just pretending that it's just her imagination sooo.......

where is the best (read: cheapest, least hassle) place to buy sound deadening products?
i would prefer dynamat extreme or something of similar quality.
where do you boys (craig, mo and others) source yours?
and before you ask, i have tried and struggled
cheers boys

If you want value for money, you can try the Aerpro stuff. I don't know how good it is, but FWIW I know it's half the price of Dynamat and Stinger Roadkill :P

Adam, I was going to suggest getting rid of the wife but as people have pointed out, it's normally cheaper to adjust your modification to make her happy. :D

The first few things to try are the thick rubber mats from Subaru. I picked up a set and they work fairly well. Also a boot tray liner which helps a tad. Otherwise you could move into the sound deadening sheets inside the doors and such.

But I reckon it may be an issue with your centre pipe. Having sat inside Pete's car (blacknwhite), I still find it reasonably quiet. However it helps that he had a manual so he could control his shift points and RPM leveling (btw he's got the rubber mats and boot liner as well). I think the airflow is being disrupted because it flows freely from the dump pipe, but then hits the restrictive centre pipe and causing a lot of vibration. Haha. I dunno. You could try adding a muffler/resonator (prior to that huge one Subaru put in) to the centre pipe because that will make a huge difference as well.

They delivered in a week. Really good, and good prices.

Also get yourself some dynaxorbs while your at it and do the front doors as well.

The KEY to quietening the exhaust down is the parcel shelf and area around the rear wheel arches. Or if you've got a wagon, the tail gate and rear quarters.

There isn't a way you can silence the exhaust is there? All I know is that for cannons you can get generic inserts to quiet them a bit.

Also, maybe ask an exhaust specialist if they know of any other ways of silencing the exhaust. Maybe an in-line silencer or something? I'm just shooting in the dark here.

It's quieter because you're slowing down the exhaust gases with that insert with the tiny opening. Unfortunately that also means a bit of a hit on performance as well (compared to a free flow system).

Not only slowing down exhaust gases, but you're disrupting the flow. It could potentially have a significantly detrimental effect on performance compared to a 'proper' solution like a resonator or muffler.

Remember a muffler's job is to muffle - a cannon isn't doing that. :P

In fact, they shouldn't be called cannon mufflers... fart cans will suffice

I agree get a hot dog resonator put in I would have thought this would be heaps cheaper then sound deadening the car...

Cheers

Fair point, but the initial post was about using deadening to quieten down the cabin of a car with a noisey exhaust. Not what exhaust to go and buy to make his car quiet.

Adam, what exhaust/mufflers do you have on the car?

i've spoken to brians mate adam and i'll probably go the dynamatt Xtreme route through him. does any one want to help me install for all the beer/spirits/wine/saki you can drink? i hope to get the boot and rear floor done and i'd be looking for someone who has taken seats out before because that kinda makes me nervous

I've done it, it's not that hard. Three bolts and you're done, from memory.

Everything you need is right here. Guaranteed.
