My Other Subaru

Postby parso_rex » Wed Apr 15, 2009 4:20 pm

For those that don’t know me of the other Subaru forums (ricenet mainly  ) I have another Subaru animal that I’ve been working on for a couple of years now. Its almost complete (disclaimer : I have said this several times now )

Image

The car is an 04 STI with a fairly extensive list of mods

2.5L Sleeved Block
04 STI 2.0L AVCS heads mildy ported
Kelford 264 AVCS cams and JUN springs and retainers
Pauter Conrods and CP pistons with 2.8mm oil ring mod
14 mm Headstud conversion
Garrett GT35R (3082R) turbo with .82 housing V band
Tial 38mm External wastegate
APS BOV
Autronic SM4 PnP ECU
Innovate LC1 analyser
Custom Dump pipe and exhaust with 4>1 headers
Sard 800cc injectors, Sard regulator & MRT fuel rails
Bosch GT40 engine bay pump, Walbro in tank pump with Spec C pickup
Hyperflow Monster FMIC and Hyperflow Oil Cooler

Theres been a few different configurations since I originally aquired the car. At first the block was fitted with standard size ARP headstuds which at a track day resulted in one very expensive engine rebuild. The Headstuds actually stretched causing water to get in which washed away the top of a piston and cracked one of the ‘unbreakable’ sleeves. I was fairly pissed off that it should fail so comprehensively. I was running 24psi though 

Engine two however is a lot stronger and cost a small fortune. With 14mm headstuds and Pauter Rods news sleeves and CP’s this thing should be very very strong. I had it all retuned and the power was some 30 Kws down on what I had with the old configuration. Plus it just wasn’t running right. I was dicked around a fair bit and paying $250 and hour for the pleasure and it just wasn’t right so I decided to start fixing it myself.
I realized that in the states they don’t have jack of all trades machanics and tuners. They use an engine workshop to build the engine, a mechanic to install it in the car and then they get a dedicated tuner to come and work his magic. Not being an idiot and have a heavy electronics and IT background I though I might just see what this tuning ‘dark art’ is all about.
I contacted the guys at Autronic and they were very helpful with software and tuning tips. I’d already built my own interface cable and worked out logging and determined that the things were indeed not done very well

No thread would be complete without a dyno plot or two would it ?

This is with the old GT3040 (Gt3082R turbo) .

Now we’ve upgraded to a bigger GT35R (GT3582R). Heres the latest that I have with this...at GFS late last year before they closed up shop

Anyway I'll continue onward....

I go bored with the power drop off at 6K rpm it would just fall over no matter how much boost I pumped in to the sucker. AS I had now chnaged everything we decided to pull the motor out once again and put some decent aftermarket cams in.
Thats now complete and we've converted the car to 2WD so I can use my mates Dyno at Miranda for the final tune
I was supposed to do this on Monday but it has been pushed back probably friday night or over the weekend

Engine work was done by SMW's workshop down south as was the tuning, now I tune it myself under careful guidance of course
Any boltons such as the new cams and turbos inlet and exhaust manifolds etc etc I do myself at the workshop. I have a lot of tools but not a hoist nor a dyno thats whats mates are for

Liberty is currently stock and I swore I would never touch it of course no one believed me, the bad news for it is I've just ordered a CAN openport cable 8) everyone was right. Sorry car LOL
The other good news is that the workshop is about to buy a brand new Mainline 4WD dyno, so there's going to be a lot of flashing going on round the southern suburbs shortly

great work mate and you will love the CAN openport cable as there is lots of goods things to log and the subaru can bus ecu is excellent I think. Should be easier to tune than your wrx I reckon.

I am hoping to get another 20~30 Kws out of it but the injectors are the limiting factor. This Dyno that we use has some amazing features that the dyno dynamics do not. It can actually connect to the Cars ECU and make the whole tune process very simple and quick and more importantly correct and not guesswork. I have lots of info on this
I should change my avatar to the Lib but its only been washed once since we bought it

I've tuned a couple of STI's with the earlier tactrix cable but only pre 06 of courseThe Subaru ECU is pretty awesome but its slow to tune yet of course still well worth it. You simply can't beat its low load low rpm factory mapping anyway. The ECU thats in the car is an Autronic so its all done in real time. Believe me the fuel and timing tables are incredible simple to get spot on . I end up mapping every cell in the entire table (that I can access) because the auto-tune feture is so quick and simple. AVCS is this week goal as I haven't tuned that before

The CAN bus I've been want to look at for some time, that the future even in the after market. Should be fun
