MY05 GT Clutch Options ??

Postby GT_Tony » Sun Apr 12, 2009 8:39 am

hey all, it seems my clutch is ready to give out soon :-(

the engagment point is at the every edge of the pedal and gear changes are getting noticable harder.. altho its not slipping through the gears

what are my options on replacing the clutch and prices ect???

the 05 GT have the 'Duel mass flywheel'? can i simply replace that with a more available unit from the WRX?

is there any aftermarket kits available? (NOT heavy duty)

Subaru's answer is around $2500 to $3500 :(:(:(

would you have to replace the flywheel though? I thought you'd just have to replace the friction plate

My understanding, is that if you have a dual-mass fly, it needs to be replaced when the clutch has changed.

Looking for a single mass fly wheel might be a better option as they can be machined... But depending on the car, it can increase vibration through the gear shift... I think :P

I know the OEM clutches seem to be holding up pretty well with everyone, but I personally would look for something that is slightly more heavy duty.

Are you the same GT-Tony on ozlib?

As I said on ozlib, my clutch is fried too but I've been lucky enough to find someone to do the repairs for me (just have to wait 2 weeks as he will do it in his spare time on the weekend). He sourced a new heavy duty clutch and flywheel kit for under $1k. Sure beats the subaru solution of $3500...and yeah the dual mass flywheel is a ripoff at $1800 alone.

I'll let you know how it goes but any reason why you don't want heavy duty?

the one and the same champion 8)

i found that EXEDE make a single clutch kit to replace the Duel-Mass Flywheel for average of $1600 (was quoted $2400 for the Duel-Mass kit)

now the question to be asked is: has anyone already converted there liberty? are there any differences that can be noticed?

(SYDO- had a bad experince with a Heavy-Duty Clutch in my Forester.. new clutch in.. hadnt even got the car home when BANG.. byebye gearbox.. kinda scared me away for anything heavyduty with Subaru's HAHA)

I've driven a couple and yes, there is a difference ... they were much better with improved feel.

Subaru just don't understand clutches.

(and generally if someone blows up a gearbox, the problem is right behind the steering wheel)

i think you'll find Exedy only do H/D clutch plate and H/D clutch cover not the flywheel

the kit is sold with a dual mass flywheel or with out it meaning you use your own and i dont know of anyone who does an aftermarket one
but ill be happy if some one could find one as not even the Japanese have come up with one as yet

*must note we are talking 2.0L turbo 5M/T here (NOT 6M/T)

Exedy do make the OEM replacement kit with and without the DMF but after speaking with them directly they apparently do have a rigid conversion kit that isn't on their website yet. Unfortunately they dont expect stock until july!

But yeah, aftermarket clutch systems are few and far between at the moment.

Yeah Tony, from GTR of old. Good to hear your Lib is not dead.
My mate with an MY05 GT is having problems with his clutch as well. Is this a common problem in the MY03-05 GT??

AHHHHH fellas, are you sure that you have a dual mass fly????

I used to take my 05 to Scorpion- he changed mine for not all that much more than a grand and laughed when I said what Subaru quoted... He machined the non dual mass fly and put a genuine suby friction in, stating that at that stage, about 8 months ago, there was no alternative aftermarket kit available...
Car came out like brand new making me realise how bad the old clutch felt...
Whiteline rear sway, King lows, Custom quad tip muffs, Subi sport grill, HID's, Boost guage, JL slot port 12" off the standard mac, RB3l 18's ezeflash tune 150.9kw@4w 15psi 36degC...

ahhhh crap... now i'm well and truely confused! haha

so yes they do have the Duel-mass flywheel that have to be replaced = cant be machined.

or no they dont have the Duel-mass flywheel, can be simply replaced with another clutch + machined flywheel

haha choices choices choices

Did you end up getting a clutch?? Mine will be due for replacement very soon so keen to know any details you have accumulated. I got a quote from Subaru for $1200.....
