Tapper cover

Hey all,

Have a leak coming from the tappet cover. Whilst the mechanic is replacing, is there anything else i should be doing, preventative or otherwise. I believe most of the cost involved is labour.

About the only thing that he can do that will save labour while doing cam covers is the spark plugs. They normally only get don with major services like 100,000klm etc maily because they are designed to last that long and they are VERY expensive for spark plug..Like $40 each.. so if it is only 10K away from having major service you may consider getting them done while he's in there.

Following up on this -

Had the spark plugs replaced when doing the covers. Mechanic said the old ones were looking pretty worn. They'd only done 50,000km roughly.

Is this a sign of something more sinister?

You take closeup photos of each plug, numbered to reference the cylinder, then “read” the plugs to get an indication of how the engine is running.

Otherwise, use conventional diagnostics to check your state of tune.

Logging, learning view etc.
Or use a shop scanner to look at AF Learning 1: a healthy engine is within +/- 5%.
