Subaru Legacy/liberty swappable gearboxes?

Postby Timelordtype40 » Wed Oct 07, 2020 11:22 pm

Hello, I'm looking for information on wether or not a similar model 1998 Subaru liberty Rx 2.5L gearbox is s interchanable with the Legacy GT 2.0L gearbox.

Gearbox codes are;
Liberty 2.5L - TY752V4DAA
Legacy 2.0L - Ty752VBBAA

Ratios are the same, 4.11. the mounting looks almost identical ( I can't confirm because my liberty gearbox is still in the car and I can't find any photos of another).

The main reason for asking is I've been trying to hunt down the same box that is in my liberty 2.5L so i can swap it straight over, however I have been unable to find any for a reasonable price, and the only one I did find was $850, which honestly is quite ridiculous, considering I'm being offered a full gc8 WRX 5 speed with rear diff for that price. I just don't want to go through the hassle of doing the swap. The legacy gearbox is being sold for $500.

If anyone has information of wether these gearboxes are the same or if I'm able to get ahold of another liberty gearbox it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Try this site, put your gearbox code into the online calculator and it should spit out all boxes with the same ratios, final drive etc.

https://legacypic.uk/subaruInformation.php

Other than that your concerns will be related to push/pull clutch type, speedo drive and sensors as regards compatibility.

Generally Subaru manual gearboxes are quite swappable if you take into account the above considerations.

Here they are for comparison:
You can also plot a gear chart on the site...

As for the mechanical fitment details try the FSM faq link in my signature for info on the respective models.

As I mentioned, lookup the mechanical and loom differences between your car and potential donors using the workshop manual FSM.
That document contains everything you’ll need to know regarding looms, plugs, mounts, clutch type, speedo drives etc.

Plug n play, matching gear ratios etc. looks like you’re limited to RX boxes of the same gen.

Ask the question on eg subyclub, you’ll get a more specific response as that forum is more gen3 specific.

You can also search nation-wide databases for used parts or hit up your local self serve wreckers for a $300 box from the same model.

Btw most of the part out posts you’ll find on FB these days, I’m happy to post a wtb for you :good:

Have a good read here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=34980

And: https://www.google.com.au/search?client ... s-wiz-serp

And lots of gearbox swap post results here, no doubt the tip of the ‘berg :)
