Hey mate,

Benefit of the gen V is it is a bit more roomy in the wheel arches before fouling occurs versus earlier generations. To keep cost down, stick with 18x7.5 or 18x8 since this will allow you to use your current tyres. You will find 18x8 is more common in aftermarket brands.

Offset wise, you need to keep it quite positive to avoid scrubbing. Stock is +50. In 18x8 with 225 wide tyres, +35 or more positive will fit with no guard or suspension mods required. Looks wise, +40 to +35 range fills out the width in the guards perfectly in my opinion.

Use an online wheel size calculator to compare any different dimensions from above.

Sweet thanks for the advice, currently ive got sti17s from the prev owner (17x7.5) so im going to have to get new tires anyways sadly, theyre 36mm offset i think and they dont come out as far as id like, maybe that whole fitment thing is just my young taste.
i think im going to go with 18x8 though, tyre options and such.

Maybe double check that as it would be quite abnormal for a Subaru optioned wheel to be +36mm. Typically they are +55mm to +47mm at most.

Also, +36mm on a 17x7.5 is not the same as +36mm on a 18x8 due to the overall wider rim. It will "poke" an extra 6.3mm.

Keep in mind that if you foul the outer guards, you are up for more $$ to roll the guards :)

Thought it might have been more positive in offset! At +35mm, the outside of the rim is basically in line with the fenders, which most people prefer the look of. Any further out and it will scrub.

Lowering definitely helps looks of the car and fills some of the wheel arch gap above the wheels. You get the added bonus of less body roll and improved cornering performance as well.

I personally don't prefer the sti springs as they only reduce height by 15mm, but they do improve performance with stiffer spring rate. Most other aftermarket springs will be 25-30mm drop. Common choices are lovells, kings, H&R, whiteline etc. Just be aware that lowered springs typically wear out the OEM bilstein shocks quicker over time, as they are not designed for the lower height and higher spring rate. This is a common trade off though if you're trying to keep the cost low.

It's not a bad option to go the lowering route first. It will be cheaper than a new set of wheels and tyres, especially if you can do the install yourself :)

If you haven't already, have a look at the 'Australia 5X100 Wheel Buy Swap Sell' group on Facebook. It's a pretty active page with lots of listings each day.
