gen 4 folding mirrors

Postby SIMO888 » Wed Jul 27, 2016 9:04 pm

Evening all I was just wondering if anyone can tell me if I got the folding mirrors and switch if there is any additional wiring, relays or things needed other than the mirror and switch ???

Bit of a can o worms, best look up the chap that did the mod in the uk as its rhd specific, the us diys have a lot of superfluous rhd to lhd info on top.

In short, the jdm harness has 2 extra pins for heat iirc, but the adm plug still fits in, apparently as its smaller: 9 vs 7 pins...
Heat can be supplied from switched fused 12v iirc but a timer relay might be a good idea.

From memory the wiring is all there on the body side to fit the manual folding mirror switch which also has the mirror control, headlight leveller, eco button etc...

The USA diys suggest that the Prefl motorised cores fit the Postfl mirrors but I've not yet tried it.

From there, it's possible to add an auto fold module so they activate on key-on/off.
I bought an inexpensive unit on eBay or aliexpress, but like the rest of the parts, switch, prefl folding heated mirrors: I'm saving the project for a very rainy day. :)

If your buying eg on import monster, I'm fairly sure folding heated mirrors were stock on jdm spec b's and iirc the harnesses have a metallic bronze sheen on the shielding tube.

The oem wiring all exists in the post face gt spec b for the JDM folding mirrors. the only thing you'll need to add is the fold/unfold wires. its a cool feature as the jdm mirrors are convex with a blue mirror tint. cheers to bbb

Specifically, your jdm mirrors came with jdm doorside mirror loom & plugs, allowing an easy converter loom.
Amirite? :P

I bought a pair of electric ( not auto folding, you have to press the button to fold / unfold ) folding mirrors from Japan. Finally went to put one on the car tonight, and what do you know the plug on the mirror is bigger than the socket on the car. So not a plug and play. There are 4 extra wires in the mirror plug, 2 blacks, a brown, and a grey. On the existing manual ( ie your hand ) folding mirror, there are only 3 empty slots so I can't even swap the plugs over. So that's put the handbrake on that job :angry2:

FYI the info in one of the above posts about the wiring having a metallic bronze shielding over it is correct, as the mirrors I bought have that, so I thought I was golden, but apparently not........

What Gtbsti did, because he had both male and female jdm folding mirror plugs on the mirrors he imported, was to make a merge loom of the door loom part, so his mod is fully reversible.

You have options:

source a jdm door side plug from a folding mirror equipped car, a gen4 or tribeca (the audm facelift model had folding mirrors as standard iirc).

source that plug from eg the denso catalogue,

or cut the mirror plug itself so the other side fits in and splice the two wires for fold/unfold signals and run them to the folding mirror switch.

Or depin the folding mirror plug, repin it into a non folding mirror plug, leaving the two fold/unfold wires loose, and connect them to your added fold/unfold signal wire.

That added fold/unfold signal wire is a T (or V) configuration, the arms of the tee running to each mirror, the vertical part to the switch. 2 core wire, it’s advisable to fish or poke it through the door loom boots near the door hinges.

So in some aspects, on an rhd car, the mod is plug and play, just find a method to add the fold/unfold signal wires.

Its an easy one to over think, due to most of the DIY’s being rhd to lhd usdm conversions, adding extra complexity.

For rhd cars it’s very simple as described above.

OK thanks Benny. The new door side socket from the Denso catalogue sounds the most appealing to me, I cannot stand bodged and hacked wiring, and I like the "factory original" look, even if it has been modded.

Question for you regarding de-pinning the connector, I have already tried to do that on the new mirror because the part that bolts to the car that the mirror then bolts to is a bit rank on the Jap mirrors I bought and I want to use that part from my car. But I couldn't see under a microscope where the tab is to release the pin from the plug. Even the electronics guy at work couldn't find it. I've de-pinned the whole loom on my motorbike and put all new plugs on before, so I have half a clue what I'm doing, but couldn't work this one out :?:

It does flip open, I don’t have mine here, but it definitely does and it took me a while of poking to spot the join.

I’m removing, repinning, my plugs because I’m swapping prefl motorised cores into postfl non folding mirrors :P

This thread has pics of the depinning process:
https://www.wrxforums.com/forums/11-sub ... -swap.html

In that thread someone suggests the plugs are sumitomo 12pin plugs common to Toyota, Nissan & Subaru.
So I googled that and up came Sumitomo 6098-5275
http://prd.sws.co.jp/components/en/deta ... s=60985275

Here’s the mating part: 6098-5277
http://prd.sws.co.jp/components/en/deta ... s=60985277

Even if they didn’t fit (dimensions on website) find the other end and repin the lot.

Or something like the TE 174045-2...

Okay wow, so this is totally a thing.

Bit confused about the wiring, though...

What the hell are the blue and yellow wires? And, what I wanted to know at first, how do I find a lock and unlock signal?
