Help me! which clutch fits my car?

Postby vinshonz » Tue Aug 15, 2017 9:34 pm

Hi Guys, i've searched the forums and i'm getting conflicting information is my clutch the 230mm or 240mm?

from this thread: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=34253&p=435382&hilit=8294#p435382
HardwareBoB wrote:As a rule, 5MT = 230mm 6MT =240mm - Fitment for an STi will be the same as a 6MT.
5MT has a push clutch, 6MT has a pull.
There are however exceptions to the rule, because nothing is easy.

Just to correct Peter - There is no 5MT 2.5L GT, only the 5MT 2.0 GT and 6MT 2.5 GT Spec B.

HardwareBoB states 240mm

The 2.5 litre turbo models with 6MT have a 10mm smaller diameter clutch disc. The H6 is 10mm larger.
Check the Exedy website.
http://www.exedy.com.au/clutch-finder

H6
Size 240 Spline OD 25.2 No. of Teeth 24
2.5 DOHC-TC
Size 230 Spline OD 25.2 No. of Teeth 24

A number of the ebay sellers are promoting the 230mm HD kit for the EZ30 H6 units?
Buyer Beware.
Cheers!

BillyCorgi states 230mm

If i was to buy the 230mm it will be the FJK-8294HD (heavy duty)
if i was to buy the 240mm it will be the FJK-8658HD (heavy duty)

can someone give me definitive answer and a review on these HD clutches? is the pedal feel going to really heavy?

G'day Vincent,

I bought mine a year ago from these guys in Melbourne, I called them first and gave them my VIN to confirm which one I needed.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/EXEDY-clutch ... Swl9BWMuvL

I paid $640 so not sure why this is $957.

Give them a call.

The pedal will not be too heavy, there is much more bite but pedal feel is only marginally increased.

You won't know what size it is until you remove it. I went through the same thing, and couldn't believe that there was no consistency. But Subaru apparently went to the WRX Parts bin around that time, and there is no consistency. Unfortunately not even Subaru can tell us based on the VIN. Clutch experts like Jim Berry told me the same thing, he has seen it all over the years.

You can use either 230mm or 240mm clutch kits, but it has to match the flywheel your car currently has otherwise you also need a replacement flywheel.

I bought the Exedy FJK 7737HD which is the heavy duty 240mm version (same spec as 3.0L libs as well as the 2.5L) have it in both my libs.

The flywheel in my 6MT TBSTI was a 230mm one so I had to get a used WRX STI flywheel for my car to make it work.

I'd say get the 240mm anyway, if you need a replacement flywheel just get one as required. It's the size that's "supposed" to be in your gearbox anyway. 230mm in 6 speeds is a byproduct of Subaru trying to save money during manufacturing.

Decent priced 7737HD kit for sale in VIC http://exedydirect.com.au/subaru-rwx-si ... clutch-kit

Get your local mechanic to pricematch it

Clutch is great for pedal feel even driving in traffic, can't beat it's performance/value at the pricepoint. It's not too heavy and not too soft, just right and it can also handle any further upgrades you're likely to throw into your car.

Man this is so confusing, but Thanks James im starting to understand it now.

Why did you get the 7737HD that was for the H6 and not the ones listed for our GTB's? was there a particular reason?

Exedy website lists for 08 Liberty GTB :
FJK-8658HD for 240mm heavy duty
FJK-8294HD for 230mm heavy duty

So... if i buy FJK-8294HD for 230mm heavy duty + Exedy FF01 230mm Flywheel = im guaranteed to have it all fit into my gearbox?

The FJK7737HD is also the replacement for a WRX STI 6 speed. Therefore it suits a Liberty 6 speed, the only variable is the flywheel

Sounds like good insurance of buying the flywheel before too.

Worse case is you don't need it and on sell it.

BUMP

just a update, clutch installed. i had a 230mm clutch in there

Image

worn clutch and heat spots on flywheel lol

Now for anyone doing this clutch. to change from 230mm to 240mm clutch, you need 3 more clutch plate bolts.

230mm has 6 bolts, 240mm has 9 bolts

Also do yourself a favour and put a tube of Nulon G70 in there & get BilliCorgi's shifter rejuvenation bushes
