gen 4 navigation system McIntosh vs new version(denso?)

Postby mfroes » Fri Jul 21, 2017 9:08 pm

Hi Guys,
I have been looking into retrofitting a navigation system into my 2007 liberty sedan.
It currently have the McIntosh stereo, which in my opinion looks cooler than the other versions.
I was wondering which version of stereo would you guys suggest? I saw that the newer version stereo is already dvd compatible, so it would be one thing less to worry about, that would mean no extra space on the glove box would be used, right ?
what about the sound, which one would you guys think would be better?

The first link is newer but no nav.
The second link is pre facelift with nav.

I would forget about the factory nav system and install an android tablet for nav as per some guides found on this forum.

Keep stock sound system but upgrade the sub maybe.

Sorry i got a better photo now

the problem i see with the McIntosh ones is that it does not read dvd and it needs an extra module inside the glove box. that would mean more work
the reason i wanted the stock one was so it would look sleeker and insert a rear view camera as well as i am not wanting to part from it on a long time so i think it would be worth the hassle.

so the second one is older ? i don't know why i thought it would be the other way around (having DVD, DTS and Dolby surround)
have anyone tried to play one of the high quality surround audio CD on one of this devices ?

This is definitely the newest version that came out of the gen 4.

Still I'm sure for the money spent on a stock system, an afternarket sat nav and reverse camera would be 10x better with respect to image quality and touch response.

I don't know about the rest of your questions but I'm sure someone else will know.

maybe someone can explain more, but aren't you confusing it with the other radio as well?

?
one has the dvd functionality but the other one doesnt. also there is no dvd logo, dts, or what i think it is the microphone on top of the volume button?
hopefully someone will be able to clear this question out as i am unsure.
I think that the dvd version of these 2 just came in late 2008-early 2009 models
https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/chippin ... 1152484296
that is a 2009 model that came with the dvd version and mine is a 2007 and came with the McIntosh radio.

it would be good to find an aftermarket like this one which is no longer in production (Caska CA3606G). the problem with it for me is that it ran windows ce.

I looked at the pictures and was about to agree with Surge. The DVD type looks more like the older pre-facelift one. But I think you could be right mfroes.
The DVD Model is rare as hens teeth. I have been involved with the Satnav DVD Map thread for many years, and have never come across someone who has one of these latest headunits.

Even though I have a very late model Gen4 that's an MY09, I don't have one of the DVD model headunits.

I guess you've seen the Satnav Install guide thread below, including the PDF tutorial on installing a factory Satnav?

It's MUCH more difficult and expensive to do this, instead of getting a modern aftermarket unit. And you end up with a slow, outdated Nav that most owners like me rarely used (Google maps is much better). A friend rode in my car and said it looked like a Map off an Atari game . He's got a point, especially the green areas like parks.
A custom harness has to made, and you need all the accessories like Satnav antenna that sits on a bracket behind the instrument cluster (which you may or may not have).
And if you get the newer DVD headunit, this guide above may not even work. So you'd have to find one at a wrecker and see how it's connected, and do a lot of research yourself. But if it's worth it for you, go for it :good:

Hi, I have a gen 4 MY08 with the ltd ed sat nav (DVD in the head unit & can play DVD's & has the Dolby surround). Ebay has one listed now if you want one & the maps do look a little better as they take the C2 map not the C1 that looks like stick figures !
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GENUINE-SUBA ... 1438.l2649
you can also connect a reverse camera & aux plug to it ! :D and it should be able to play from a USB if you get this - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CTASUUSB001- ... SwYIxYANG6 (it will also give you the AUX and save you having to make one). Maps look like the atached photo. ***forgot to mention, it comes with BLUETOOTH as well ! very basic bluetooth, but you can answer your phone thru the car but not stream music......
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me, hope this helps you. :D
