Oil Analysis - Anyone know what oil the Dealer uses?

Postby tom_kauf » Mon Nov 28, 2016 10:07 am

Does anyone work at a Subaru Dealer and know what Engine Oil they use? I've asked mine twice, and got 2 different answers .

They said it's Castrol, but weren't sure what type. I assumed Magnatec, but one post on this forum said Edge.
Weight is most likely 5W30. They said that when I called them last week, but the first time I asked they said 15W30 (which isn't even a grade that the Manual suggests, so I doubt that).

Reason is that I'm getting my Oil analysed. I run E85 and have some mods, so I want to know if my oil changes are frequent enough and if the oil is holding up. And they need to know exactly what oil was used.

I'll probably just do the oil changes myself from now on. But when I was still running 98, getting it done at the dealer (at half the normal engine oil change intervals) was ok.

It's definitely castrol edge.

You can just walk up to the parts counter and ask to see a bottle.

I'm just not sure if it's edge titanium or edge professional. And I can't remember exactly if it was 5w30, but I would believe so.

Ok, excellent. Thank you.

I'll tell the oil analysis that it's Castrol Edge, and see if they need more info. That and 5W30 weight should be enough though.

Unfortunately asking the spare parts interpreters wont necessarily help, If your local dealership is anything like us the bottled oil will be different to what your car is serviced with. We do oil changes with Castrol Magnatec fully synthetic and the bottled stuff is mineral crap. If you speak to an adviser or workshop controller they should know or be able to find out for you.

Thanks Jake.h71, interesting that some Subaru dealers use Magnatec. My local one definitely said it's Synthetic, so that rules out Magnatec in 5W30 (unless it's the 'Stop Start' Version of Magnatec). Some of the Magnatec range is semi-synthetic.

Hi Tom,
STi docklands confirmed with me they use castrol edge 5w30 full synth. On the invoice it's listed as "'FULL SYNTH OE5W30' "
Cheers

Thanks gtbsti :). That pretty much confirms it's Edge.

On my Invoices it always just says Standard Oil, so that's not very helpful. But they confirmed it is Fully Synthetic.

be careful as there are many different 'castrol edge 5w30' engine oils, i just use the regular castrol edge 5w30 from supercheap, although it has spec api sl which isn't recommended for e85, i suggest if you are using e85 tom, run an oil api sn spec, such as nulon 5w30.

Thanks jarrenowen, now that I'm running E85 all the time, I'm getting my Engine Oil analysed. If the mechanic used the Oil that I think he did (Castro EDGE 5W-30 A3/B4), then it does have an SL spec. So I'll definitely be going with something higher quality from now on.

Tom,
Dont forget to ask for a full analysis on your oil - some only do a partial (5-6 elements) unless you ask for the full ~14 elements job. ALSGLOBAL do this.

Thanks jp928,
I think Lubrication Management do it pretty thoroughly. Do the test values below compare to what you'd expect from a full analysis (17 Items in 10 categories)? Sorry for the low quality phone screenshot.

Tom,

I would have expected more detail as to elements detected, apart from water and fuel. Items like, Fe, Si, Al, Pb, Na, Cu etc are common, as they tell you lots. I have a sample pdf from ALS showing what they test for.

Ah ok, interesting. In the next column (which isn't shown in my screenshot), they hand-wrote some metals in the Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals section (Iron and Aluminium in my case, which is Fe and Al). And Si is Silicon, which is Dirt/Sand on my sheet.

But there are definitely some more items on your page that aren't on mine.
