Thule Roof Box Experience

Postby Shaheenis » Thu Dec 01, 2016 4:07 pm

Hi there,

Looking to buy one of these second hand for a road trip down south over Christmas. Does anyone have any experience with these? Are they noisy? Do they create a lot of drag? What do they look like?

I am looking at the the Pacific 200 model which looks like it should clamp straight on to my ProRack whisper bars.

Cheers,

Tim

They are great. Thule are great quality, make very little noise as they are pretty slippery by design.

I have the Pacific 780 (I think), a previous model. Mounted on Prorack Whispbars with the wind on clamp set up Thule have.

They look OK, as much as a box on the roof can look.

Mine adds about 10% to the fuel consumption, but as I'm usually loaded up with four plus luggage when I use it as well, so it's hard to tell what the box adds by itself. Cheaper than a trailer for sure.

Great for throwing all the light bulky stuff into.

As Muzza stated, they are great and handy. Expect it to add a little to fuel consumption, but nothing extreme.
Just remember that if you are loading it with anything weighty, put it more toward the centre. It means you have to reach a little to load it up, but the balance for steering will feel more normal. I had it a little too far to the passenger side and turning right could feel the wagon "roll" a little more than normal.

Thanks guys. Picked up a Pacific (370? I think) second hand in great condition. Fitted to ProRack Whisper racks with the same wind down clamps and it fit very easily and perfect size for the wags. Went really well from Brisbane to Coffs Harbour and yes I did notice fuel economy up a bit but makes no noise and only handling difference I noticed was some side wind loading at times. Fit heaps of stuff, massive pram, portacot, huge picnic rug, high chair, baby carrier and a couple of other random items - oh and 8 of those large foam tiles! Great purchase.

Here is a photo when I got back from 10 days of driving with this on my roof. It is a Thule Pacific 200 and it is a perfect fit on the Liberty Wagon as you can see. You would be surprised how much you can fit in this thing and it is weather proof. It doesn't interfere with the tailgate (clears by about 1 inch). And you can open the sunroof without any issues.

You just have to remember it is actually on the roof when there are low shopping centre car park entrances etc. I tend to leave the sunroof open when I have it on to remind myself.....
