Da4sti3s Sound System Build Thread

Postby Da4sti3 » Sun Apr 24, 2016 9:30 pm

Hey everyone this will be my build thread for my new sound system
Ill be doing a full makeover of the standard stereo including double din headunit 2 sets of components in the front doors, rear mid bass drivers and one single subwoofer in the boot
I could go 2 subs but I want to keep some boot space for when I may need to chuck the kids school bags in the car.
My proposed plan is to have the 2 amps mounted in the boot along with the subs
The amps will be positioned in the spare tyre well and a custom sub floor will be built with the sub box built along the back of the seat not sure if ill do a ported or sealed enclosure but im leaning towards ported
the reason for mounting in the spare tyre well is so i can upgrade easily if i decide to add another sub or something in the future, also its a possible location for second battery if the system requires it aswell
I may also flip this idea and mount the sub on the sub floor using the wheel well as the enclosure with the amps on display in the boot for even more boot space.

Went and saw Callum at AVDC today he was great. He was very helpful and has answered all the questions I had regarding this build. I told him my plan and his advice was to do my battery upgrade first.
Ill be getting the biggest optima yellow top battery that will fit in there and then ill be upgrading the earths and power leads in the engine bay to 0g wire.
Now that I have a starting point I can now start to work towards it Stay Tuned !

OK here is my first concept drawing of the system layout. I have since been informed that im missing my remote turn on wires to the amps. But im still trying to work out how to split the it to the multiple amps.

Ive just been told that to do this you just run the remote turn on wire to amp but before installing it twist another wire onto it that will connect to the next amp and repeat for the third amp. Simple enough it would seem !!
Could also run a relay aswell which id prefer since it would be neater i think and then i can also connect some fans if i want to cool the amps

Few things.

1. I'd leave rear speakers as stock and invest the money saved in better fronts. You don't need the rears and if you're going to put 2 sets of 6.5" splits in each front door you wont even hear the rears. This would then eliminate the need for the 2ch amp.
2. I'd install the sub amp under the seat also. Unless you buy an amp that physically wont fit there, but these days with class D amps you can get a alpine PDX1.1000 (1000W RMS @ 2 or 4 ohm) or PDXM12 (1200W RMS @ 2 or 4 ohm) or JL HD series amps that provide similar power to fit under there easily. Very efficient amps and don't heat up too much.
3. You won't need the RCA splitters. If you get a 6 ch processor (provided you don't upgrade your rears), you can set the sub outputs for sub, front outputs for the 6.5" and the rear outputs for the tweeters. This way you'll also keep L/R balance and time alignment.

My main question is what are you trying to achieve from this system? Loudness? Clarity? etc...

I can see what your saying about not having the rear mid bass drivers but there is going to be so much top end that i need to fill just above the sub levels
i listen to mainly heavy metal music occasionally ill dip in hip hop music. So it needs loud and good sound quality.
Im still contemplating the sound processor
If i can get a decent HU that has 9 band eq and time correction i can probably ditch that idea since im not that much of an audiophile
Yeah i could invest in higher priced components to keep with the factory look but im going for a custom look so extra speakers in front doors are needed. Will be doing a custom build out to fit them in.
im still thinking about the amp mounting positions too.
As the wife drives a Kluger ( Soccer mum duties etc ) this car is not needed for anything other than driving me to work so fitting them in the boot wont be a problem i dont need the space in there.
This wont be a show quality car but a custom fitout rather than a stock looker is what im after. Once this cheaper fitout is done i can look to upgrade to better quality speakers in the future.
Cheers Mihai

Hey, Hows this coming along?

Build spec's look good but id add one thing - A 1 Farad (Or greater) Capacitor.
This with your optima yellow top and you'll have no chance of clipping. :D

You building the Sub box out of fiberglass or MDF?

I'm toying with the idea of mounting two 12" Alpine type R's in the spare wheel area of my wagon, I'm interested to see what you do! :D

This project went on the backburner pretty quickly after I wrote it
A few things came up that needed attention and havent got back to starting it yet...
I say yet because Im just about to start building a new house so all extra monies is obviously going into that.
Ill get around to this project one day !!
I plan to keep the car and spend big on upgrades instead of buying a new car so first thing will be interior mods and sound system but unfortunately house plans will come first.
