OK LETS TALK TURBO'S

Tossing up on whether or not to upgrade the VF46. Speaking to Matt about it and he suggest the TD05-16G. Question is, do I go for 8cm housing, billet wheel and 9 blade turbine?

What I am looking for is lag to come on no later than 3000rpm, have more mid range to top end torque. I also have a stock auto and engine and probably wont go E85. So want to ensure I get the most out of this engine without pushing the limit. The VF52 was another option but I was hoping for something slightly bigger.

Thoughts? Suggestions?
Cheers

You should buy a VF36... I might know one you can buy ;)

(but failing that - 16G will be good, or VF52,both not too big or small)

Could try and pick up a second hand 52 for less than $1k then can just bolt it on, re-tune and drive away smiling

16g is pretty well similar to the 52 isn't it, don't most people go to the 18g to get a bit more out of it?

Yeah a few have gone the 18g path but it just moves the torque more to the right. I'm not out for outright power just looking for moo mid range with the occasional top end squirt. Matt recommended the 16g for my needs. Can get it from that site for about 1k as it is.

So....the latest is, my radiator died on my today. Top tank shat itself. So got a new OEM one fitted. Only $100 more than a recoed one and with a 3yr warranty. A no brainer really. Replaced all 4 plugs and rocker cover gasket. Total = $715. In total, thats a $2162 major service with EVERYTHING done.

Did you consider an alloy radiator?
I think they're the same price as oem.

No. I paid $370 for the OEM one. I didnt think it was that bad. How much are alloy ones again?

Shav if it is genuine then $370 is a very good price. When mine died earlier in the year I was quoted a discounted price of ~$600 for genuine and they had previously been more expensive. I opted for the Mishimoto alloy which was a bit less than $500 delivered. At least you know your radiator should be good for another 100K or so ;).

Thanks Tim. That's good to know. It was $270 for a recon top tank and flush. I was told the pinch welds that hold the tank in place get weak once they are tampered with. Not just that, how would I have had till the bottom tank failed? Then its out again and another $270 plus labor to fix it? Nahhh, the extra $100 for genuine & 3yr warranty was an immediate yes. Hopefully peace of mind for next 3 yrs. I will look into an all alloy unit later should I have the car in 3years.

I went for a Blouch TD05-18G earlier this year and it's awesome.

Spools at around 2700 and works really well with my auto, no lag changing to 2nd gear and it pulls hard. I think full boost (18psi) comes on around 3750-4000.

Thanks Adam. Sounds good. I know Matt suggested the 16G to me to a bit quicker spool off the line and a bit less up top. What size housing did you end up getting with that unit you bought? Does it have more leg room for more power later on?

I've got the 8cm housing, and yes I've got more room but I'm not going any further with power.

So that is the larger of the 2 options? Cool. The other option for me is to go the 18G and get the 7cm housing instead. Much like you Im not after overall power and I rarely push the redline as it is. Just looking for maximum usable increase in power from the mod range and top end without sacrificing too much bottom end. But still running the stock engine.

I think on the TD05-18G it's the smaller(standard) size, as it comes in a 10cm too. I was after the same as you, stock engine with a mild power increase. I went on the advice of my mechanic as he said you can go a bit bigger with turbos on the auto as they hold spool between gears, or something like that.

I've got no regrets going with the 18G.

That's killer. Good to know. I seem to see there are more 18G's available for sale too second hand.
