Had a knock in the front left of the car I just bought. After visibly checking LCA bushes (already replaced with Pedders items in the not-too-distant past), started going through a list of other possibilities that I got from this thread; strut nut, crossmember bolts, and check spring location. (Very helpful thread btw.)

Luckily enough it was the next thing that I tried - the top nut hidden under the cap was loose. I held the bolt from the strut in place with a 6mm robert allenby and tightened it back up. You'll need a 17mm spanner with some level of offset on it but other than that it was an Easy Fix. :)

Good to hear. If only this was the fix to my clunk. Has anyone replaced strut tops? I know in previous models these could result in knocking issues. Can't tell by looking at them.

Replace tops, repack strut housings with grease.
Helps to bolt everything up with weight on the tyres eg on ramps.

Any idea on what tops to use Ben? Standard or aftermarket?

If my budget was unlimited, I'd go CS Marche stock upgrade caster/camber offset top mounts, or the Whitline versions for GR.

Ot see if the ADM OEM p/n can be bought via Partsouq...

Would these do the trick? https://www.japanparts.com/parts/detail/17593

I can't see any rubber on these like the OEM ones. Wonder what this would for NVH.

It increases it a little apparently.
How much depends on your other mods in strange ways.

Whiteline camber caster for GR, BP/BL retains the rubber mounting :)

Yeah I had a look at the whiteline ones. Do you need to undo the 3 nuts, drop the strut and rotate to adjust? Looking at the instructions it appears that way. If I replace them will seriously consider OEM or Whiteline.

Just for the record my clunk went away when I swapped the front struts for a replacement set of second hand billies with aftermarket springs. The strut top bearings were shot so I suspect this was the issue. Cheers.

My local Subaru service centre finally sorted my knocking by retightening the top strut bolts. Not sure which ones but it's finally gone, after some expense too. Still, happy chap now.

:alcoholic: I had the same problem.
I was told it was the srtut mounts, then another more trusted, mechanic went over the car again, and the strut needed replacing, or re-valving. But with the 'new' ones available for $550 for a full set, i just replaced the lot, as it was going to be about $340 to get both front re-valved. :banned: :bad:

I had this knocking noise in my spec.b. It was front sway bar bushings. Bushings looked good and tight but after comparing to new bushings, there was least 3mm hole difference to new ones. Front sway bar is very tight so it is not easy to spot worn bushing. Sway bar bushings are very cheap, 6$ aftermarket version.
