Quarter times for 5eat

Postby 2jz929 » Sun May 17, 2015 11:43 am

I've always used quarter mile as a measure for the difference mods make and it has always interested me. I always race my cars stock then document the changes.

I just ran my stock 2004 GT wagon auto down Willowbank and got a 15.1@89mph, which imo is a lot slower than it should be for its power/weight. My boost gauge only reads 12psi though, so this could have something to do with it. I did find the MAP sensor hose was stale and loose so this may have impacted it.

Next I'll pull the tmic off and check the throttle body hose and all the vac lines.

It then gets a dump pipe made on Tuesday and it will be time to head back to the track. After that will be tune and that probably it for a while.

Questions are:

1. Is 15.1@89mph too slow for a stock auto wagon?
2. What could be causing 12psi boost? (holds solid)
3. Anyone raced with just the dump changed?

Most importantly:
4. Whats the typical time with a dump and tune?

Cheers.

It was disappointing to run slower than my stock '04 XT Forester auto despite supposedly having more power.

The ET may be a little slow but the MPH is about right for a stock 04 GT. Keep in mind the car is 11 years old now and no doubt feeling a bit tired compared to when it rolled off the showroom floor.

How old was the foz when you took it to the strip?

Would have thought more people would have taken their 2.0gt autos to the strip. Any 2.0l auto times worth mods would be nice, just as a comparison.

Definitely not running right

Standard boost 14.5 psi

Running 98? Do a learning view and check Iam and fuel trims

Stock with brake boosting should hit low 14's

With brake boosting you can launc at full boost and get 60ft times down real low

And 89mph is a little down on power should be up near 95mph

My ej20x back then with stock 5eat box (with bolt ons on e85 making 250awkw) ran a 12.2

Cheers guys. I thought 89mph was on the low side. I find an old and brittle MAP sensor hose that had oil all around it so must have been leaking, so have now fixed that. Pulled the intercooler off and hose clamped the bov release and checked all other hoses and have now disconnected the battery to reset the ecu. Will chuck the boost gauge back on tomorrow to check if it has increased.
Dump pipe gets made tomorrow also so will be good to see if that helps in case the cat is getting old or something.
Will hopefully be back on the strip in a week or two.

Nice times jzlayz and dr20t, nice to see these things moving.

The previous owner definitely wasn't running 98 as it was right down on power but it has had a couple of tanks run through it now and picked up a lot but this was pre-drags.

I guess the next step is to buy what I need to run this LV and learn all about it.

For the LV you just need to get a tactrix cable.
http://www.tactrix.com/
Then download the learning view.
There is a pretty good discussion in the "tuning" section on how to read the data.

Well AMauto made the new dump today. Two cats removed and one highflow in its place. Its a real shame so much extra noise comes from removing the cats as it sounds pretty terrible now (but I do like quiet cars). Will see the difference it makes on the quarter then start looking for a tune.

Don't drive it without a tune - believe me on this

Dump pipe releases backpressure off turbo

Reduced backpressure means more airflow through the engine

More airflow means change in fueling requirements, amongst other things like Volumetric Efficiency changes meaning different valve and ignition timing requirements.

Running without a tune could make you run lean. Running lean is bad. Very bad. Melted pistons, burnt valves and broken bores bad.

Lean condition also causes knock. Knock is detpnation. All engines hate detonation, but particularly Subaru's hate detonation. Detonation will put pitting in your rod bearings, which will eventually peel them away from the crank or starve the crank journals of oil.

This will blow your motor.

Furthermore, running a dump pipe on the stock vf38 twin scroll you have, which is extremely tiny with a tiny ass rear turbine wheel, will bring it way past its efficiency very quickly. In stock form with a stock dump pipe, they hit full boost at roughly 2400rpm. With a dump pipe this comes down at least 200rpm to 2200rpm. At such fast spool rates, your chance of leaning out, knocking and all sorts of other nasty shit is much more likely to happen. Without a tune you have not optimized your setup for the tiny turbo which is now spooling off its face, and will be well past efficiency by 5000rpm.

Just my mad ramblings so take it as you will

Mick
