Caltex E Flex at Kirrawee... it is so worth the drive.

Hi Kido thanks for post

Isn't E flex at kirrawee E-70 - E85? Can that cause issues with tuning? My other issue with E85 is if your travelling somewhere which I do a fair bit, having to plan in advance on fuel stops ect cause of limited access

paggaz wrote:Hey mate,

I've had a Kinugawa TD05H-18G 8cm (with standard blade turbine) installed for just under a year now and am still loving it. I bought second hand off Brainy on here.

Running very similar performance mods as you but still have the stock fuel pump and injectors which made a safe 210 kw atw on 18psi tuned by Matt on here. I could get full boost a smidge under 3000 rpm. I have the optional Kinugawa 1 bar actuator and to my understanding it's not ideal if you want more adjustment using the "I" drive. (eg more difference in boost settings between modes)

Thanks Paggaz some great info there

Do you have any experience with 8cm vs 7cm? Ie have you heard from anyone else as to the performance differences?
And you also recommend getting a higher psi actuator then? Would I want higher then 1.2bar to get over 18psi or is that sufficient?

I've emailed Kando performance and have been quoted $1090 for td05 18g 7cm with billet compressor and 9 blade turbine. But from what your saying I might chance to 8cm and higher psi actuator?

Thanks again everyone for input

Sorry no experience with the 7cm rear. Can say that if you're sick of the VF46 running out of puff in the high end, the 8cm might suit you nicely.

From my understanding (and Kido Matt might be able to correct me here)
If you want a good range of boost control through "I" drive, you want something similar to the stock wastegate actuator (ie, 0.5 bar). That way you can run wastegate pressure in I mode for economy, and S and S# mode can be controlled electronically in your tune. My old tune with the stock turbo had a good range of boost control from 8psi in "I" mode, 14 in "S"and 18 in "S#. With the new turbo and 1 bar actuator, my boost pressures are 14, 16 and 18 respectively.

(I think that's what was happening...help me out here Matt. )

Yeah I think I get what your saying. If I get the 0.5bar it will allow me to get lower boost in 'I' drive setting which the 1bar won't allow for.

This is prob a stupid question for some but the 0.5bar actuator won't limit how high you can go. Ie: could it still run 20psi?

Thanks again

I think as a rough rule of thumb you run a spring pressure matching the minimum level of boost you want. The electronic boost controller can 'trick' the wastegate allowing roughly double the boost pressure to be held.

ie 0.5 bar actuator will allow 0.5-1 bar boost
1 bar actuator will allow 1-2 bar boost

0.5 bar actuator allows up to 30psi no issues

The other thing is 0.5 bar gives a safety factor. If the engine has to diable boost to protect the engine for a bad batch of fuel, it goes to wastegate pressure.

Thankfully, flex fuel means you can run E85, E70 or even 98 on the same tune ;)

Thanks Kido
Didn't know that was an option. Are there any other supporting mods needed for this?

Stock turbo, just E85 rated fuel pump, fuel filter and tune. Get a fuel pressure regulator if you want a little bit more top end

Would you recommend me to do the same thing to Eflex tune Matt? pump, fuel filter, Fuel Pressure regulator and tune?
Cheers

How are you doing flex tunes without a flex sensor Matt?
If E85 and E-flex weren't dead men walking I'd ask you to sign me up haha

Unless Matt has worked more magic since a couple of weeks ago, he told me the full eflex tunes are possible for the H6, but not turbo (unless you have a flex sensor I guess).
But his E85 tunes can let you run (off boost - say in [I] mode) on half a tank of P98 if you get stuck somewhere without E85.
I think you could just buy bottles of methylated spirits from a servo (or Bunnings / Go-Lo / supermarket etc) and make your own mix to get you out of trouble.

I'm running stock injectors, so yes, with some limitations, depending on other mods, you can run E85 fine.
As Matt said, E85 rated fuel pump, filter and tune is all you need to start with.

From memory Matt said my injectors are at 90% IDC, VF52 turbo. So might need injectors to run Eflex.

but how does the factory ecu sense what fuel you have in the tank?

This thread is getting OT (sorry OP)...

In most of our cases the ECU doesn't directly sense the fuel as we don't have a flex fuel sensor (i.e. we don't know exactly what % ethanol is in the tank).
You need to be tuned for it and then only use E85. Best to talk to a tuner (e.g. Matt (KiDo) and/or get a tune - he'll let you know all the details).
