Licence Plate Globes coming on instead of Reverse Lights

Hi all!

I've got a 2001 Subaru Liberty 2.0L sedan. Since about two weeks ago, my reverse lights stopped working. I did the usual thing of checking fuses and globes. Everything came back fine but still no reverse lights. So I pulled out the connector in the boot just behind the hinge and checked for power. There IS power coming from the reverse light switch, but still no reverse lights!!

So last weekend I pulled apart the harness (it connects to licence plate globes, LH reverse light, RH reverse light and the LED stop light in the spoiler) and made sure there was nothing earthing out and everything was apparently fine. I put it all back together and now the rego plate globes are turning on when I put it in reverse and STILL NO REVERSE LIGHTS!

I'm completely stumped on this. Anyone had any experience with the Liberty sedans or have any ideas?

Download your factory service manual aka FSM and check your wiring against the diagrams.
Maybe the wires are mashed up at eg the tailgate connector tube.
