Variable Geometry Turbo

Postby Nikko » Sun Feb 01, 2015 5:57 pm

Hey guys,
So i've been putting a bit of research into turbo's and looking at a few options for when I most likely will change to an aftermarket turbo. I am curious if anybody has installed a variable geometry turbo? How did it go? Major issues, extra costs involved?

Usually found on diesels. although Porsche use it on the 911.

Not sure if they are used in the aftermarket, but I assume you will need some sort of a controller to adjust the vanes based on engine speed, boost etc.

My understanding was that the vanes were controlled more by the actual exhaust flow rather than controlled electronically.

Possibly, but all the ones I have seen have a electronic servo.

The turbos are VERY expensive because you have to make them out of inconel, and the controllers are VERY expensive because it's basically a whole other ECU to control the vanes, and the installation is VERY expensive... you get the idea. I read a bit about them today, but tldr, VGT turbos are a WOFTAM on petrol engines unless it's a money no object build (I'm talking koenigsegg level here)

So what about twin scroll? Surely this has been done on the liberty's sometime?

Pre face lift came with twin scroll from the factory, twin scroll on any lib is easy, get twin scroll headers+up pipe, twin scroll turbo, make sure the dump matches and away you go.

Thought that would be the case. Might put a bit more research into this though I suppose there is also that when you get to a decent size turbo the engine is more limiting then isn't it?
