Turbo advice

Postby GONEWALKABOUT » Fri Oct 24, 2014 8:08 pm

SO here comes one of those 'which turbo for the noob' posts.

Basically im in the market for a turbo which can get me 230atw nice and easy (potential for more power would be ideal), currently have a td05-16g and its pretty lame.
Looking for a ball bearing turbo currently looking at:
Garret gtx 3076r
Precision 5858 (~$600 less than said above)
or some borg warner, havnt figured them out yet.

both turbos are more than powerful enough however i dont know enough to choose between a .62 or .84 and what spool im looking at (2.5l manual 6sp) and is the garret worth the extra.

Open to other suggestions obviously as i realise these are quite high output turbos
Plz senor help me out

Current Info: (for 2.5L)
Model, Peak boost (rpm), Peak Power
AVO
400 ~3200rpm 400hp
450 ~3600rpm 450hp
500 ~4400rpm 500hp

Currently running this(well an older version) but it ticks every box ;)

5858 is journal bearing for the cheaper price. Comapre the ball bearing pricing Vs the GTX ball bearing pricing :)

230kw atw goal....I would suggest a GTX28 series and/or GTX3071r and/or similar turbo setup....

0.62 for quicker spool and mid range punch(drivability)....0.84+ for top end power....(but with some with laaag)

With my GTX3071r with a 0.72 I get full boost by 3100rpm-3200rpm....but my car has some minor mods...

thanks so far guys, the ball bearing 5858 is still alot cheaper than a gtx. the ss-30 you suggested matt is that just rebranded?

Yeah lag up until 3500rpm wouldnt bother me. what would you expect with a .82 .84, 3500-4000?

Go for the smallest turbo that will give you the power you're after for the boost level you will run.

Ie if a gtx2860 can get you to 230awkw then use that. If you want to leave some headroom for more power down the track then that's a different story but be prepared to give up some responsiveness

Fwiw a gtx2867 will get you you're power figure with insane response. But don't expect more than 240atw on pump fuel as an absolute maximum.

Stock block I'm assuming so no more than 21psi? If so then 2867 is perfect in my opinion.

Thanks mick, although that sounds good, responsiveness doesnt bother me overly and i would love some head room for later on!

However if if 230 was fin then that would be perfect.

Aps Sr400 on Rexnet atm... Is JB iirc.
Avo 380 or 400s would do the trick, they're GT2871 BB...
Or any 20G (JB) or Blouch 1.5 (BB)...
Or as suggested Six Star options...
Gra'sGtLib on here has a complete Spec C TS kit FS iirc :)
And the Tomei Arms also FS here...
Let us know how you go. :)
Ps are you staying with flanged or going straight outlet on the turbo comp?

No worries.

I get that responsive might not bother you, but if turbo A can be at full spool by say 2500rpm, make peak power of 230kw atw, and hold torque to say 6500 rpm; and Turbo B is at full spool by 3500, make 230+kw atw and hold to 7000rpm (or more), then which one is more usable for your goals?

Turbo A will always feel faster (more area under the curve), be more fun in all circumstances (if power/boost is limited to PR's that Turbo B is not able to showcase its true benefits), and be more efficient. Turbo A in the above provides an additional 500rpm of power band, which is huge, and if you're capping power and boost because you're on stock block etc, then it doesn't really make sense to use a larger turbo like turbo B.

If I could have my time again, I would go with a gtx3071 with a 0.63 on my ej207. Sure I may have lost 30-50whp up top, but the 500-700rpm spool I would've gained in the bottom end, and transient response (compared to my gtx3076 0.82) would be more impressive for street and track duty. (Bear in mind mine is a 2.0litre albeit with extremely well flowing heads)

Only time you will reap benefit of a large frame turbo is in drag racing (providing you can launch with boost - either antilag or launch control or brake boost if auto).

I reckon even a td06-20g bb billet wheel sps (kinugawa/kamak) would do for your needs.

Strike the avo 400L and above from your list imho.
Way more laggy/less fun than the 380/400s or 400lgt due to having the 4/5 exhaust turbine housing.
The smaller AVO's have the 3/4 housing ftw...

Any of the BW EFR turbos will be great, use their comparator to work out which one you need.
Given an unlimited budget go TS, low mount, WTA to reversed inlet mani.

ATP have by special order a twin scroll exhaust housing for the GTX286xR frame turbos

20psi@2800rpm and make the power with ease

unfortunately the turbo needs to meet a reasonable budget with quite specific setup.

Needs to be single scroll with dual v-band turbine and straight out compressor to fmic intercooler and EWG.

Thoughts on Journal vs Ball-bearing? worth $600 more for BB (precision turbo) or in general such as garret etc.?
Apparently only upto 300rpm spool advantage with BB, less oil use and durability.

If you're going v band turbo inlet and outlet you might as well go the tial housing

When you say 300rpm of spool that's significant. 300rpm in real world is huge.

Bb is better for transient response but I haven't seen any solid evidence of better boost threshold with bb vs bush bearing.
