Got annoyed with the colour difference between the grille and the lip, so lip is getting a few coats

And this is happening:

Going to rip out the old donk and give her an overhaul to sell. Nothing major, just some new pistons (I'll likely drop some forged in it), OEM rings, bearings, head studs (probably ARP but not the 625s), gaskets and pumps.

Started work on the new engine yesterday.
Image

It's a 2013 JDM EJ207. It's not a Spec C or anything like that but I've found out it has all the goodies I wanted!

VF49 twin scroll
Image

Nicer headers that aren't rusted to all buggery

Image

(Yes that shinier crap is Alu heat shielding but underneath is nicer steel)

Today I went to take the timing belt cover off to inspect and ended up turning my long block into a short block with a few boxes of parts lol

Image

Image

Image

It's even got the fantastically think cylinder walls I hoped for

I wasn't planning stripping the heads but when I asked Kris if is should do the head studs, the conversation basically went like this:

Me: "What's your opinion on the stock head studs? Should I just go some better ones now while it's out?"
Kris: "Well if it was mine I would put better studs in but I'm not a pussy"

Simple. Straight. To. The. POINT! That's Kris for you.

So heads came off and new ones are going in.

I just want to send out a huge thanks to Kris and his boss Wendy at Rising Sun Subaru for letting me fk around with my motor in their workshop. Thanks guys :)

I can't wait to get this engine in!!!!

Fantastic news man! Love that setup with the vf49. Plans for E85?

Here's hoping you get it in under the bonnet soon! :bb: :clapping: :bb2:

What are the benefits of the VF49?

Still a couple of weeks away, but mid-June I think is achievable...as long as things fall in to place.

Ummm, compared to what mate?

The VF49 is, so far as I can tell, a twin scroll version of the VF43/48.
Here 'tis next to a 43 (49 on the left):

Image

It isn't the best photo, but the compressor housings at least are identical in size and the comp wheels (from what I can see) are the same.
It's just the hot sides which are different: the 49 is definitely larger.

So benefits over the VF48, bigger. I guess
And I can run the STi inlet (assuming I can make the LGT throttle body fit) and GR/GV TMIC. Which is the size of a decent FMIC core.

The other thing I'd say to shav, the 2.0L motors don't quite flow as much gas as our 2.5s. And then a 3L would flow more still. This comes into the equation of what turbo to choose for any particular engine/purpose.

Stick a vf52 onto a 2.0 and I doubt you'll enjoy driving it compared to a 2.5 with the same vf52.

Twinscroll turbos are fantastic as they spool a little earlier - and IMO are essential for the 2.0 engines.

It makes up for the smaller engine volume and you get better fuel economy too :)

Add some higher revs and they're able to keep up with the 2.5s peak power wise.

So yeah. Awesome setup

^WHS^

Only non-TS VF turbo I'd go is the VF34...but only for the awesome amount of Rexnet points it brings

Vf49 and vf56 are the largest front and rear wheel combo Subaru have ever used in any vehicle - fact

The twin scroll makes it just a little more awesome

And alexei I think you will find those heads will outflow any other EJ or EZ motor out there - 2.5 or 3.0

Air flow is not just capacity. Its head efficiency. And these have PLENTY of that.

Ask tony knight what he thinks of these heads. He almost shit a brick when he saw a set and apparently words to the effect of "these are even bigger than most of all bar my race ported ej heads"

I'm not arguing there :D

Do you have the exact numbers or are you just estimating these heads make it more like a 2.5 with normal heads rather than a 2.0?

Matt (McL/TH/KiDo tuner dude) tells me these heads flow 30-35% better/more than Cosworth's $7,000 "CNC Ported Big Valve Cylinder Heads"... that $7,000 incidentally is about what it's costing to buy install this whole engine (engine/turbo/TMIC, head studs, fluids/oils, gaskets/seals, etc. and the install cost). I call this BFYB :D

I measured the inducer size of the 49 and the 43 and there's 2.8mm in it. A fair bit. Added to the larger rear wheel and lack of exhaust pulse interference up top, coupled with the engine's capabilities (I'm starting to remember more and more why I got it  ) and I'm actually hoping to better the ¼ mile time I did in my Foz on E85 (12.9/106).

Fixed your statement too, Mick 8)

Huh?
I think Mick is referring to the CFM those heads can flow.

I was asking about low revs/bottom end comparison to a 2.5....as I understand - at low revs, even with average heads, a 2.5 or 3.0 would be better for response/torque and to spin the turbine

I was curious at what point in the rpm range does the ej207 start to outperform an ej255/ej257 (assuming they're running the same turbo) :)

But as soon as the 2.0 is on boost it would equate to the 2.5, then spin another 1500 rpm higher. Into the next gear and miss that dead spot.
