In my 2004 Outback, the CD tray simply pulled down and out, giving access to the filter. A little swearing and pulling, and I had the filter out. They slide straight back, after the two bottom tabs are lifted over the anchoring notches. So, Lift the bottom two tabs over the notches, then pulling down and back on the top two releases it. Hopefully!!
I washed it in carby cleaner, blowing that out with compressed air. A bit hillbilly, I know, but we are on a budget. I left it in the sun to dry, and sprinkled it with activated carbon before re-fitting it.
The carbon will absorb some of the nasty gasses from outside when in the city. I think the matting is infused with carbon already, but as it is a reused filter, I think the added carbon can't hurt.
Good info on the cheap on-line ones, I will have a search. My daughter paid $72 for a newy from my local dealer a week or two back. We are already up for over $200 in gaskets for this car, and as my son only works part-time, he doesn't have lots to spend.
