Steering Wheel Controls

Postby Doctor » Tue Jul 15, 2008 11:51 am

Hi all,

I have searched for this and browsed the forum for an answer...apologies if its covered somewhere else...

Is it possible to buy from Subaru ( or wherever) and install the steering wheel controls for the sound system?

If yes, then can I assume that the same goes for the cruise control?? I have an 06 2.0R and I really miss my steering wheel audio controls from the last car....

Does this require any sort of re-coding of the BCM or are they just plug and play??

ok, don't shoot me for this....

i remeber going to subaru when i 1st got the car and asking for it.

they were saying that it might need a headunit and steering wheel upgrade. something in the region of 7K.

but i don't hink it should cost that much. i put their comments in the same bucket as "don't bother filling your car when u run out of fuel, just buy a new one"

The LGT forums show it working on 08 US models with the 6 disk CD.

I've not heard of anyone trying it on the equivelant JDM 07 model (which I have) but I was considering ordering the parts from the US and giving it a go... saving up the $'s at the moment...

Just as a matter of interest, I have a steering wheel with the audio controls sitting in my garage. It's in very good condition, except for a small nick at about 2 o-clock where it was scratched when my side window was smashed.

The first thing you would need to establish is if your car has the necessary wiring through the slip ring to the wheel. That would be a lot of effort to retrofit.
Be very careful playing around with your wheel, don't forget there is an airbag in there, primed to go off in your face if you make a mistake!

just to note.... the US guyes get a different head unit i thinks.

so even if we can get the wiring and all that to work, the head unit might not have that external control module.

i go check my owners manual later.

Yeah I'm a little dubious about mucking around with the steering wheel. the thought of an airbag exploding in my face doesn't sound nice.....I think most other cars say to simply disconnect the battery so that the pyrotechnic device can't be accidentally fired (especially when mucking around with a myriad of wires behind there!)

Sure. I'll be organising another tshirt meet shortly. I'll post some pics of it tonight too.

The white 3-pin connector is for cruise control
The green 5-pin connector is for the audio controls

ok, so we've worked out that the part number is: 83154AG001

at this stage, it's only for the facelifted ones, but i remember seeing a similliar write up on the pre facelifted wheels.

i'm gonna call subaru tomorrow and get a price.

subaruparts.com have it for about USD$100 landed in the US. so even if i put in an order now, it'll take about 2-3 weeks for it to turn up. (my brother is in the US).

if the price difference isn't big, i'll get it from subaru australia.

i'm also gonna PM phat and see if he can get it.

i'll TRY to do a "how to" / "DIY" thing when i get the part.

The replacement wheel for my car cost AAMI $1,368.62 earlier this year from Subaru Australia!
That only covers what you can see in the photo, the airbag and centre section are extra. (They just transferred them over from my old one, as only the rim was damaged.)

Gotcha. I'd been assuming it was a completely different wheel.

subaru has them on back order from japan, current ETA landed in AU is 6 to 8 weeks.

pick up price from subaru is for AUD$222.

personally, i'm hoping phat can get these for us at close to the US price.

can we please have an EOI to proceed should this work out in my car?
