removing dual range selector in centre console

Postby 08_adaml » Wed Jan 22, 2014 12:24 pm

Hi all, this may seem like an odd question, (ive tried to search but couldnt find anything) i have a spare gen 4 centre console that i want to replace in my 2.5i manual liberty wagon.

the spare console has two cup holders, rather than one cup holder and the ugly dual range selector. Is there a way to eliminate the dual range selector, either by cutting the selector and fixing it out of the way or maybe even removing it all together.

I havent really had a look how its all connected, whether its linkages or electronic switch, so im unsure of the method...

any help or advice is much appreciated..

Thanks.

I am also interested to know if this retrofit is possible. I've had the console out before and know the the dual range selector is connected via linkages and is not electrical. I wouldn't want to permanently damage the selector to get rid of it but if it could be disconnected at a point a easily reconnected if I choose, I would definitely want to upgrade my centre console.

Any chance you can post a pic of the current console?

Sorry to highjack your thread Adam but I'm assuming that you have the same console. This is the only picture I have at the moment but all it has is a single cup holder behind the selector. I can get better pictures if they are needed?

It's as easy as removing the shifter and tying the cable to something under the consol to stop it jumping between high and low range. I opted for the single range 5 speed box instead though.

Too easy mate, and I highly doubt that there would be anyone who would change their gearbox so they were able to fit a different center console, ha ha.

All good mate, i was away for the long weekend, but yeah my console is the same! i had a feeling you could just cable tie the cable out of sight. Sounds good. Once i have a bit of spare time, ill do a write up when i install the centre console and post it in here.

I did the conversion on the weekend. Piece of piss. Cable tied the shifter cable to the hand brake bracket untill I swap gearboxes.

If anyone is interested I have a spare center console and black shifter surround for pre facelift models.

Walk through with out photos

Step 1: park car on flat level Ground
Step 2: disconnect battery
Step 3: remove shifter surround
Step 4: remove duel range shifter handle By taking handle apart and undoing the screw found inside
Step 5: undo 2 bolts found in center console
Step 6: UN clip hand brake cover
Step 7: gently lift center console out of the way
Step 8: remove 12mm bolts holding shifter braket
Step 9: remove cable from shifter
Step 10: pull cable firmly out so as to make sure it's in high range
Step 11: cable tie around the pin in the end of cable to the handbrake bracket
Step 12: cable tie the cable as hard as you can towards the drivers side of the tunnel so as to miss the cupholder in the new console
Step 13: reinstall everything in the order you removed.
