Squeaky boot lid Gen IV

Postby MY02B4 » Sat Sep 21, 2013 2:27 pm

This is up there with the worst posts ever made but can someone tell me how to get rid of the loud squeak from the boot lid everytime it's open/closed? I took off the trims on both the bootlid and the quarter panel and sprayed a fair bit of quick drying lube onto the hinge but it didnt do anything. I can tell the noise is coming from both ends of the hinge arm. On the bootlid side, there aren't any movable parts so i'm guessing maybe the bolts need to be loosened and lubed? How car the end that goes into the boot?

Thanks!

I just sorted this myself. The noise for me was coming from the contact points between the metal rods that run across the top of the boot. Greased them up and the problem was solved. I can send a photo of the exact point if you need more detail.

The rod/joint can be found on both sides of the boot. Let me know if it helps.

Hey mate did you have to remove the boot liner to get to the rod? I pulled a few clips out but it seems like its a single piece that runs to the boot latch hook so I gave up on removing it. Will have another look this weekend.

They're the springs for the boot, shouldn't need to remove anything to get to them. One of the first things I had to do when I got mine.

Daniel is correct, you just have to look at the right angle to be able to see them. I pretty much had to lay half in the boot on my back to get a good angle.

All sorted as well thanks. I also had to spray the hinge arm with a bit of lube as well but the main culprit was the rod.

I believe that the springs are the metal rods which run along the underside of the parcel shelf. They flex as the boot opens and closes, which obviously puts them under load like a spring. It's not a spring in the sense of a traditional coil spring. I lubricated all the contact points for those rods, and in the middle there's a small hook which holds them up, and I wrapped each rod with a felt-coated tape to stop the rubbing.

You shouldn't need to remove any of the boot liner to do it, unless you want to lubricate the boot hinges as well, but I'm pretty sure the squeaking is related to the springs.
