Had some time on my hands today, so took the car to Ivan for a full lube service. While I was waiting, and the car was up on the hoist, I started to look around the rear mufflers and observed they looked a little untidy from the recent work, so we whipped them off, I scrubbed them and then this....





Also took the Y pipe out and gave it a clean and....



While the rear mufflers were off, I started to look at the heat shields that sit above the rear mufflers and with a couple of taps, I heard some rattles come from that region, so they cam off too, and this is what we found...





There was a significant amount of gravel trapped between the heat shield and the body. As they are a very light piece of aluminium, they tend to reverberate as well with the current exhaust/mufflers setup. So, while they were off the car, I scrubbed them and then....



We decided to lay a coating of rubberised paint on the top surface to help with the sound dampening



But, only on the top side...



So, all back up on the car now and sounds much better on the drive home, a little less raspiness on WOT. May consider doing all the heat shields this way if it proves to be durable.

Yes, probably am, but you have just got to take advantage of an 18 degree day in the midst of Melbourne winter!!! And spraying some bits that needed a bit of touching up was the aim.

The other thing missing from the heat shields is some form of dampening isolation. They are bolted directly to the underbody and this helps in transmitting any noise. I reckon they also could use some high temperature rubber washers between the shield and the underbody.

Let me know when you find some!!!

The mid-pipe with front muffler is all 3-inch. The rear Y section is initially 3-inch and 2.5-inch after the Y to the rear mufflers.

For an NA, this will be too large and you will notice some loss of low rpm torque. I feel a bit of this at the moment but it is compensated a little by the boost. Hopefully a good dyno tune will help when Matt is next down.

Just sounding u out mate on mid and y-pipe sizing as hopefully will be going sc within 12 mths.
Have built N/A xhorst with the raptors, 200cel hi-flows, 3rd cat delete and TCP quads, stock mid n y-pipes - Pretty impressive sound.

Ok, that makes more sense. If I were to do this again, I would try a 2.25-inch centre and Y pipes. Probably safer from a low rpm torque perspective with low boost.

Just an update.

I have had no issues with the car since the rebuild of the sc unit. All running well. I am currently on a road trip to Canberra via some back roads and found a nice little straight stretch of very quiet back road to let her loose. The rush from 3500 rpm to redline was maintained all the way through the gears. Still brings a smile to my face!

Still needs that final tweak of the shift points and dyno session. Hopefully before the end of August.

Great build. Waiting on recent tuning numbers. There's a few people here in the States that are looking at boosting 3.0Rs and have mentioned Raptor. Your build is being watched from here. I think I may have started something.

If noise gets out of control, the fix is easy. Fit a decent muffler right up the front just after the 2 become 1 - fantastic solution if you need it

That is the plan, but then finding the right one to fit up nice and snug will be the issue, plus the hacking of a nice xForce 3 inch stainless centre pipe, not my preference. Might just have to do a custom centre with a larger oval muffler.

I had to add a resonator in about 1' rearward of the transmission to quiet down the inside. The resonator I use is a 2.5' glass pack, bullet style. Droning was so bad I couldn't hear the stereo. And its 11 speakers with a Sub. After the glass pack install, quiet. The 2 chamber Magnaflow muffler at the rear adds a low rumble to the boxer exhaust.

On the belt shredding: Early on I used Silicone tubing for the air intake to the SC. I mounted the filter in the fender and used aluminum and silicone to get the twist I needed. The 3" silicone 90 was getting sucked closed by the compressor restricting flow. (I don't know what kind of wear it caused interior to the SC, I haven't had it apart yet. I do plan on taking it apart in the next month or so as I believe I may be having compressor clutch issues due to the extreme heat we're having in Central Texas. Its either that or the 108-110F temps and 120F intake temps.) You may want to look into reinforcing the silicone. I fabbed an aluminum wire mesh to support the 90s and keep them open once I realized what was causing the boost drop and fuel enrichment at 5000.

Seeing the dual coolers for the WTA gave me another idea to increase the cooling capacity, but I have to work around the trans cooler and the smaller SC cooler. (Mines the VLLC) I am also thinking on a combination radiator for the SC and WTA that may work out until I complete design on my intake cooler system that will bring intake temps well below ambient without nitrogen freeze shots and will be self contained. (At the moment, size and mounting is the inhibitor. I haven't much room in the engine bay and don't want plumbing running inside the car.)

Keep at it. I'm at a stall due to MAP issues and fuel control. I'm stuck at 210 Kw at the wheels, as measured via RR logs. Looking at Hydra but can't get definite answers on the TCM controls. Odds are on the upward since I've already kitted the trans and apparently the Hydra controls tend to make the trans shift hard. (And no more soft 2-3 shifts since the kit. )
