I believe the earlier STI inverted mono tube struts are the same design as billies and it was common for them to knock and a re-grease (not a trivial job) would fix and I had serviced a full set replacing old grease with LM and no knock in my G1 Lib for years. A re-valve was not required so hopefully peeps aren't doing more than they need to here. These struts are a quality design and build quality and should reach upwards of 150k without need for repair or replace.

I have now have a similiar issue/noise with my GTB but I haven't spent much time diagnosing it. So far it seems to be passenger side front wheel/suspension when low speed cornering. It is not a click, it sounds more like the tyre is contacting the plastic inner guard but I can't see any sign of contact. I guess it could be a clunk. If I lock steering right and turn at low speeds it does it but I need to test left. I think it does it either way. Besides this struts feel great and car handles very well and tight for stock.

Another possibility is control arm bushes.

I've had my sway bars in for a year or more and (if I remember correctly), I've never had any noise issues from them or had to re-grease.

Cheers. I had the control arm bushes replaced with genuine items when I bought the car 10k ago so not that.

I've recently noticed this problem on my car just after it has done 140000km, when I went to the subaru dealer after a rough inspection, they just told me that I need to replace the strut with a new OEM Bilstein B6 for about AU$990. Then I called my brother who has the same car as mine and just has solved this annoying noise problem. He told me that its not really some serious problems with the strut itself, most probably just the strut top, cause there is a bearing there which will make that kind of noise. The following day, I replaced it at the dealer and they have inspected every bolts at the front to make sure they are secured. After that, I've done 200km at the weekend and nothing wrong with it, even when I break very hard, the front is still very quite, seems like I have successfully got rid of that noise. But unfortunately, in the following week, some noise have back just like before when I break but not cornering, but much much less noticeable, I mean the new strut top really helped a lot. After a useless call to the dealer, I decided to deal with it on my own. I bought a can of WD-40 SPECIALIST HIGH PERFORMANCE WET PTFE LUBRICANT which is especially developed for the Hydraulics and Bushings. I turned the steering wheels and applied the spray to all the bushings, bearings, joining and the Bilstein at the front and the back then did a 60km driving to make these structures move and make sure they are properly penetrated into the structures. Already one week passed, and there is not any single knocking existing at the front any more. Hope this will help your guys to get your car back to a quite LIBERTY without spend a lot of money~

Thanks for posting Steven but I don't think this will solve my problem. Mine only occurs slow hard cornering. For the cost of a can I might do this anyway, can't hurt ;). Where did you buy this stuff?

Bunnings Warehouse, the Super Cheap Auto available as well~ and actually there is another WD-40 called PROTECTIVE WHITE LITHIUM GREASE which is a much thicker one, maybe that one for strut top is better~

Reviving an old thread.

Did people sort this out yet?
I ran over a pothole and have the same issue.
It's only at slow speeds, and usually with small dips in the driveway or road. Mostly heard when going down my old broken driveway after the pothole incident....

Thanks

Hey Shaheenis again hehe

Just hear it, just like I showed in the video. I am reluctant to mess with the centre bolt tbh. But I will tighten the others soon as I get home tonight.

Don't mess with it, just make sure it looks the same as the other side in how much thread is exposed to get a sense of whether it may have loosened.

If it is just the sound and you can't feel it through the car body or steering, it could be something as simple as the disc brake baking plate has bent in and making contact with your wheel. I would take it somewhere put it on a hoist and have a good look. If it definitely started with the pot-hole incident there is a good chance you can visually identify the issue. Just look at all the bits that rotate :).

Yeh that's a good tip, it does sounds suspension related though it could be something bent on brakes. Doesn't that that violent though, more subdued than that. Just sounds like something is slipping ever so slightly you know? I reckon it could be a bolt, but reluctant to mess with those

EDIT:
So I just went ahead and bought these that someone listed before:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321679331633

They are from a 09 Liberty. can someone please confirm they will/will not fit a MY05 3.0R-B??

I just got a real bad knocking noise from my front left billie too. Turns out my centre bolt snapped off. The nut (with the thread still in) is just resting on the tower under the dust cap. At least it was easy to diagnose for me. Haha.

My noise is only very faint and at low speeds too, I wonder if it's not the centre nut but one of the three nuts for mine.....
