Reverse cameras

Postby psy » Fri Nov 30, 2012 5:47 pm

Looking into purchasing and fitting a reverse camera. Trying to get the OEM look, but doubt that this will be 100% possible.

Found this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Car-Rear-View-R ... 27cb20fc6c on eBay....

Thoughts?

What have others purchased/installed? Any recommendations and more importantly pics!

After a couple of failed attempts (amateur auto electrician fail) I'm going to install this one soon:
CCD SONY Car Rear Reverse Camera For SUBARU FORESTER / OUTBACK / IMPREZA SEDAN
http://bit.ly/UmA0KN
Surprised by the good finish on the delivered unit!
I went for no on-screen guidelines.
The housing is a bit smaller than stock (wagon), there's a DIY on nasioc (from memory) where the installer made a mount from hdpe cutting board so the camera sat flush with the hole and the gaps were filled.
I've already run the video cables to the back of the nav screen in preparation.
This time I'm armed with a test light, multimeter, wire taps and will rtfm carefully before proceeding.
Fingers xxx'd! ;-)

Where I went wrong with the first attempts:

Bought a non NTSC camera... Fail!
"Tested" the second camera with the pos and neg power jammed into the reverse light terminals... Fail!

Obviously the black wire should be connected to a good ground, verified with a test light.
At least it's only a major fail if nothing was learned in the process. :P
I'll be doing a (wagon specific) install DIY assuming this attempt is successing...
There's already a sedan DIY on this forum, btw ...

Better than any stock camera I've seen. This angle probably shows it most. From standing height it's invisible.

In the picture there's a funny shadow next to the camera, it's only the one little dome :)

I mounted mine to get it is well hidden as possible. As a result I get a bit of the bumper in the camera frame which is actually good for judging distances as the lines on the screen are useless.

It had to be mounted off center as the bulk of the camera actually sits above the black part, there just happens to be a nice square in the boot lid that worked well for this. To do it in the middle you'd have to take an angle grinder to the car or have it sticking out heaps.

Yeah, I bought a spare one and cut a hole to the right shape in it. Then glued it in place sticking out as little as possible. A bit of black silicone neatly around the edge and even I'm pretty happy with the result.

Finally chucked my camera in over the last couple of days.
One of these units - http://tinyurl.com/c7obmz5

Not exactly discrete but works ok although doesn't seem to display green.
Not sure if that's due to it being 'IR sensitive'. Had the same sort of look as my old Sony handycam when its Night Shot was turned on.

Reviving this thread.

Bought the unit listed in the link, but believe they sent me the wrong item as it's sized differently. they gave me a full refund which was good of them.

Question though - i'm fairly certain the sizes listed in the ebay listing are correct for the lens cover, but would love it if someone else could confirm?

I bought this one http://tinyurl.com/osbqd37 , great seller they sent me a replacement unit when mine got some water in it when some ning nong jetwashed it at a drive thru carwash.

All good it dried out eventually, but I put the new one in anyway and black silicon-ed the holes on top and around the leads too. Its awesome.

Next time I'd use just one screw and a ziptie on the other side as the replacement SS screws I used broke the plastic mount on one side.

I can help you install it, but do Resomat the tailgate and insulate all the wires with various Clark foams at the same time ;)
The chunky white foam is their C section closed cell edging foam...

Thanks, but I think wagon/sedan license plate lenses are different? Mine doesn't screw on.

The hunt continues ;)

How's the quality though?

Wish I used some tape and foam as there is a subtle rattle occuring inside the tailgate trim. Ahh well, off comes the trim tomorrow :(

Hey All
I was looking at doing a reversing camera in my 04 GT sedan, i went and got the one from ebay on this listing and then noticed that it wont fit my lights as mine don’t screw out.
I have then removed the trim and again nope those plastic covers aren't coming out without some serious persuasion which for obvious reasons I do not want to take an axe too.
So I figure I have to go for a generic one. So something like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/281107988199?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Or http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/111086246394?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Anyway, I have an older double din Pioneer that I’ll hook it up to and wanted to know what other sedan owners have done for reversing cameras.
Cheers, Scott
