EOI: Boron Nitride - BN Aerosol Group Buy

Postby bigBADbenny » Mon Jun 24, 2013 1:20 pm

I've found 2 x 375ml cans of Momentive BN Aerosol at C$110 each from a supplier in Melbourne.

What is it?
Its a heat emitting paint, an inert, non-wetting coating with the same conductivity as stainless steel.
Due to its textured surface formation when dry, BN provides an increase of surface to area.
Thus it increases cooling efficiency of metal parts, air to air, by around 10%.

Where can I use it?
I'll be applying it to my stock TMIC (top side, lower side and maybe even inside too), the stock sump and my hub knuckles.

How far will a can go?
Less is more with this product, I reckon I could easily do the parts listed and have enough left over to do a few TMIC's...

What color is it?
It dries white with a rough textured matte surface.

Hang on - Boron is a poison?
In some forms yes, but not as Boron Nitride apparently.
The hydrocarbon propellant is, as usual, poisonous, requiring a well ventilated area for application.

That's pretty expensive!
It is, 4oz cans of BN aerosol can be had for around $20 in the USA, CRC sell it there as a release agent too.
I've seen cans advertised in Japan too at more like $140 each.
If you know where to get this product or similar at a better price please let me know.

From the Momentive website:

Boron Nitride Spray

High purity, extremely fine BN crystals in a fast drying, solvent-based carrier
Supplied in 13oz. aerosol cans, shipped in 12-can cartons
Each can provides about 100 sq. ft. of coverage (!)
Produces a smooth coating with very low binder content

What the hell - is this really necessary?
No absolutely not, but its just the kind of harmless mod that I really like, enough to go to the trouble of researching it and indeed tracking some down and of course, sharing the info
Since I'll have the TMIC out soon for a few associated mods I thought I'd see what else could be achieved.

Please post your comments and EOI's :D

So why post this?
I think I'll have half a can left and so I can probably coat between 2-5 TMIC's, and I'd like to offset the cost of the aerosol a little.
The best result will be had by removing the intercooler, obviously, but a light topside coat should be possible in-place with using a large dropsheet to mask the entire area for overspray.

Since I'm removing my TMIC, I plan to make a temporary cardboard airbox to fit over the rear side of the TMIC with an inlet and outlet. I'll fire my leaf blower into the inlet, at the outlet and that will hopefully provide negative pressure on the face of the TMIC being sprayed, allowing the coating to enter deeper into the fins. A few very light coats per side should be plenty.
If successful, I'll attempt an even lighter coat using the same principal on the interior of the TMIC.

The only item left to consider is how to clean the outside of the TMIC a little.
It has a light coating of dust but is otherwise in good nick.

The fins are extraordinarily delicate - does anyone have any suggestions for a spray or soak that can simply be rinsed off without damaging the alloy?

Possibilities:
sodawater and bicarb fizz
dilute vinegar
earth choice surface spray

You bet, but so race/rally flava :P
I got the idea from an obscure Japanese Subaru hot-up site.

Yeah. Soak and rinse in same. Air dry. They evaporate pretty quickly. No need to rinse in water.

Don't use plastic container with acetone. Plenty of ventilation too...

Cheers - it would be great to get it sparkly clean before coating if possible - which I understand would be next to impossible

Degreaser should clean the TMIC up pretty well (the outside).

How tough is the coating considered to be once applied? It's an interesting concept. 10% better thermal discharge into the air isn't to be sneezed at...

No but black body emitter (BBE) coatings are popular too.

I think I've nutted out how to clean the alloy fins w/o damage.
Apparently a can of Preen is 80% hydrocarbon propellant with a little cleaner too.

So freeze the tmic to mitigate cracking the plastic/alloy joins.
Then dump a couple of cans of Preen on the fins, both sides.

The super cold hydrocarbons and cleaner should do the trick without too much pressure required.
Apparently this method works for cleaning brakes too ;)

Apparently its actually used in rally and motorsport. Now to find some proof

Yes there's tests on the interwebz showing gains over no coating. Snake oil! :P
Best do a little research, its a pretty minor upgrade IMHO, I just think its harmless and a little nerdy cool.

Yep I'm planning to put that gold heat reflector tape on strategic inlet tract surfaces as well.
