Yes, a bit more reading to do and not a lot of room to work with. I could probably manage a set of tuned stubs added to the Hitech muffs as they have plenty of room. Maybe a later experiment.

So, here is the update after today's work:


A new custom made centre section with 3 inch Mangaflow offset muffler. Sound Pressure level dropped from 92db to 84db and is now nice when cruising. Still a bit too loud on WOT, peaked at 88db in the carpark, but maybe even louder under load. Also some rasp on WOT, but one helova improvement over the off the shelf xForce tinny. I think the residual raspiness is the xForce Y pipe, so will have to live with that. The noise on WOT will be tamed shortly with a custom made pair of stock mufflers. Maybe in a week or two, so I can live with the noise for now.

When we got it off the hoist and started it, I immediately heard some hiss from the front drivers side area. We left the engine running and put her back up on the hoist and I noted two areas around the headers with some tell tale signs of an exhaust leak, one at the front of the headers and one at the rear, both on the drivers side bank. Took a very close look on the passenger side bank and also noticed similar but lower level hiss and spotted another tell tale sign at the front of that bank as well.

So, car is booked back in for resealing the headers on Monday.

Yes, I am pleased with the result, now just some more on WOT. The custom rears should be ready in a couple of weeks. Will live up to the sleeper image from a noise perspective but with the flow of a 3 inch all round!

Some final touches today:

1. The leaks around the headers were fixed by re-facing the headers and gaskets and some additional sealant was added. I forgot to get the details of the sealant, but in any case it has worked well on the way home this evening and the car even sounds a bit quieter now.

2. I did not mention in the build what hose clamps were used. We got rid of all the 12mm perforated barrel screw clamps and replaced all the charge pipe hose clamps with 9mm rounded face non-perforated screw clamps. Apparently then give a better seal with less pressure due to the narrower profile and the rounded face and non-perforated clamp forms well over the silicon and does not present any sharp edges to the silicone hoses. They are cheap, but very effective. Time will tell...

3. Checked out the details of the Magnaflow front muffler, to ensure it was a performance muffler and not a diesel/particulate filter muffler. The side of the box was not too clear in the earlier shot, but this shot makes it clear. The writing on this part of the box is advertising for other Magnaflow parts. The one we installed is definitely a performance muffler.

4. Outside Air Temperature sensor, in it's stock location, was now behind the transmission oil cooler and reading a bit higher than usual, so re-routed it to just behind the fog surround air intake on the drivers side.

5. While we had the front bar off, decided that all the shiny stuff behind the grille had to go black!

Used a satin black to match the other metal in the near vicinity. Did all the rubber hose clamps as well and it looks much better now. Will get some front on daylight shots when the opportunity presents soon. Much better than the view I saw from the TruTrack Cafe a couple of weekends ago. Too much shiny stuff visible behind the grille and that will just not do for a sleeper!

So, if the leaks are fixed during a cold start test tomorrow morning, we are ready to start the tuning and logging process in earnest!

Good you cleared on up the muffler bit....Slowly but surely...

Not sure I'm a fan of how they painted your front? not sprayed evenly nor done nicely....bit more care and preparation would of helped...

Some things are worth stealing! But was going to do it anyway as soon as I saw it when we sat down at the TruTrack cafe. Must have been a subliminal suggestion from previous surveys under your bonnet! Anyway, a big improvement from what I used to see.

Yes, agree, but it was not meant to be top spec respray, just a blackening/darkening to reduce the visibility of the stuff behind the grille. When you pop the bonnet, you cannot see the radiator cores, as they are buried behind the grille. If I get the inclination later or if the front bar needs to come off again, I will consider a touch up job.

Did some Sound Pressure Level testing today. Just for the startup and idle.


A little SPL Meter from Jaycar, mounted on my camera tripod. It measures max, min and current for the duration of the test with Weighting A applied (whatever that means)




The results at idle are 68.4 dba. On startup, it was a bit over 80 dba.

Cut open the stock rear muffler today to see what upgrades are possible, straight thru, ss wool fill, glass pack, etc.

The stock one is pretty hollow but very effective at noise reduction and added restriction.

Will work through some potential internal redesign in the coming days.
