Thanks jakey and Statts, appreciate your guidennes, this is a terrific like minded community and I'm sure other members will learn more from these processes.

I will take your advise and go for the proven Nexus 7. Unfortunately I don't have the skills to flash the ROM and after phoning numerous audio shops in Brisbane no one seems to much knowledge or to be to helpful.

If I only need internet and run apps

Do I only need the following?

Nexus 7 Tablet

Subaru Sat Nav Facia
http://www.japanparts.com/db/parts_deta ... RCH_page=3

Where could I buy the  UCA-202 > FSL-21 aux in adapter > McIntosh stereo. FSL-21 plugs in-line to changer connector - Electric Design FSL-21 McIntosh AUX in unit?

Where do I buy a Mini-Box DCDC-USB Power Supply and do I need this for my basic setup?

Cheers,

John

Have a read of this step by step guide:

http://androidlegend.com/clockworkmod-r ... e-nexus-7/

See if you think that's something you can get your head around. Whilst they make it sound risky, it is no-where near as risky as it was say 3+ years ago when flashing ROM's was a new sport.

If you can make sense of the guide, you'll be able to flash it, and I'm sure Statts can give you some info about loading custom in-car ROM once you have CWM flashed.

Hey man, just a quick question which is certainly off topic, but what gear knob have you got on your car? It sort of looks like the COBB gear knob.

i'd imagine the right angle bracket would be from bunnings/masters, as with the glue that attached it to the case.

Let's start by finding out what car you have? Pre facelift? Post facelift? McIntosh stereo? Etc etc. That will determine what aux input adapter you need.

UCA-202 is easily available from ebay. Electric design FSL-21 may not be correct for your car, need to know as above.

DCDC-USB
DCDC-USB enclosure

If you want to go really basic and try your luck, then grab one of these. The problem I saw with this is with cranking the engine, accessory power is cut in some cars, or drops very low due to massive draw from the starter motor. With the DCDC-USB you are dealing with a proper power supply, that will survive this cranking state and provide uninterrupted power. The power drop will mess with mounted external HDDs as they will drop out and cause an "unsafely removed" error, which will only be cleared by a reboot. If you never plan to use an external HDD for media storage, you may get away without a decent power supply.

Easiest way is to first unlock the bootloader, root and intall TWRP using Nexus 7 Toolkit. USB-ROM is a complete ROM based on CW10.1 nightlies (though not too bleeding edge, very stable) so it can simply be flashed using a guide like this.

It looks a lot more daunting to a first timer than it really is, like you said. If you follow the guides to the letter, it's really quite easy.

I can help with Toolkit questions and flashing with TWRP.

Hard back cover - ebay
Angle brackets, nuts and bolts and Araldite - Bunnings / Masters / Mitre 10 / Hong Kong Tool (ok maybe not HKT)

Be sure to get all the cables and adapters you need, it's all there in dot point in the first post. Ask if it isn't clear enough.

Guy's would you see any problems using a 12/240 Volt Pure Sine Wave Invertor to get around the charging/power issues?

Details

180 Watt 12VDC to 230VAC Pure Sine Wave Inverter

Jaycar Website Speel below

Having a pure sine wave output makes this inverter ideal for running sensitive items like notebook computers and motor-powered devices like fans. The unit continually monitors operational parameters and will alert you to high or low battery voltage, output overload and over-temperature. A USB socket is also fitted and supplies 5VDC for charging USB devices like MP3 players or digital cameras. This is an excellent entry-level inverter and will provide many years of reliable service.

Specifications:
• Output power continuous: 180W
• Output power surge: 350W
• Standby current: • Input voltage: 12VDC
• Output wave form: Pure sine wave
• Efficiency: >80%
• Output regulation: ±3%
• Output frequency: 50Hz
• USB output: 5VDC @ 500mA
• Size: 240(L) x 119(W) x 60(H)mm
• Weight: 1kg

Circuit protection:
• Thermal shutdown alarm: 60° C ±4°
• Battery low alarm: 10.5VDC ± 0.5VDC
• Battery low shutdown: 10VDC ± 0.5VDC
• High battery alarm: 15VDC ± 0.5VDC
• Overload: Thermal shutdown
• Reverse polarity: Internal fuse
• Input connection: Fixed cigarette lighter lead
QTY
1+ $189.00
3+ $169.95
6+ $150.95

There would be little point converting DC to AC and then back to DC again...
I was going to procrastinate, but I put it off...

Hi John,

From memory the face-lift McIntosh will work fine with the FSL-21, which is a pure auxilary input, nothing fancy just good line level input. Contact the seller by email to check compatibility with your vehicle (give him as many details as you can). http://electric-design.com/FSL-01.html

From there you will just need an USB DAC such as the Behringer UCA202 and some short ~50cm stereo RCA's (get some good shielded ones, expect to pay around $30, I recommend http://www.selby.com.au

As HyRax said, this is completely over the top. DC-DC power supply is what you want. If you want to try cheap, go with the basic 12v-5v adapter I listed before from ebay. If you want your power supply to be rock solid and give no issues, then the Mini-Box DCDC-USB is the way to go. Pretty sure I have already mentioned both of these. One is a $15 option and one is a $110 option, yet you've started looking at over-complicating things with a $190 option.....

And apparently a switchmode dc to dc adapter is the most efficient = less power draw & heat.
Commonly available with a male cig plug... :)
