Perhaps the crazy donk needs to go in a 2008 sti manual hatch I have seen......
Swap the stock sti motor into the libb and put crazy motor in the manual car....now there is an idea!
Not nearly as original but full mid range potential can then be realised.

Thinking, thinking.....

Yeah I mentioned this a few times on here including my own thread and the long ass info list I sent you a few months ago via pm when you requested it...

Definitely different mount points

You *could* probably get away with modding the crossmember but even then this is structural and will require signoff

No standard crossmember will fit straight on (neither the auto one nor a 6 speed or even 5 speed manual one).

Hate to say it but if manual is what you want then the wrx Sti is a better bet. That or buy a facelift manual lib.

Were you planning on keeping your quad avcs heads / ecu with the built motor?

Edit - also what happened to that built auto you were working on?? If you're not using it ill be keen so let me know..

Cheers

Mick

Bugger, ta for the reminder, must av missed the trans mount points in the list! Will dig up now.
auto bloke is lined up, no cash dropped yet, just been talking to many peeps recently... looks like I'll have to get car in to mechanc sooner.

What is this mount point stuff?

I recently put a 6 speed in my mates gen4 2004 GT wagon, we re-used his crossmember, and simply bolted the 6 speed gearbox mount to it.

I have never heard of this before, and it sounds insane that there would be different mount points, i shall be checking this.

Yep forgot about that....

I can tell you with absolute certainty that the trans tunnels are different

Different mounting points and different shape of the trans tunnel from auto to manual

This was the main reson I didn't go ahead with mine

Interesting, if an auto fits, a 6 speed will definately fit.

Im dumbfounded about the crossmember thing, on one hand dr20t you say audm and jdm gen4's are the same(i dont think they are, but thats besides the point), but in jap land they offered manual variants, and auto, and they share the same crossmember bolt up points, so do every single other subaru to date that has both transmissions offered.

I have not had many AUDM auto gt's to play with so cant confirm or deny this, but a single model with different crossmember bolt spacing for no reason seems very strange.

I cant see why you couldnt just use the 6speed mount, and gt crossmember though. or worst case scenario, an hour witha welder to custom a new one up, or pay someone $150 for the pleasure.

All gen 4 GT's (03-09) had different trans tunnel for auto and manual. This is fact and I've noted the difference myself.

The mounting points are different and you are correct in that its a relatively quick job to modify to fit but given it is structural will require full engineers sign off. The 6 speed gearbox will physically fit no problems, as will everything else, but not without modification to either the crossmember or mounting point. Again it can be done but is it really worth the hassle that attaches to it noting engineers will scrutinize everything including the other modifications? For me the answe was no given the substantial modifications I've made to my car which concerned me.

The point about jdm and audm prefacelift liberties being very similar is irrelevant as they all had the same issue above. Auto being different trans tunnel than manual.

Hope this clarifies things

I get what you mean now Mick, clarified ;)

As for engineers sign off on a modified crossmember, that isnt an issue at all.

Just make it properly, and your done, shouldne be any safety concerns at all, and quite frankly i wouldnt even bother with an engineer, but thats me. If i do the work i know its safe.

Does the auto crossmember still retain the same style of box mount? as in 2 bolts pointing towards the ground in the normal spot? if so the 6 speed mount will just drop in.

Im very interested in this, god gen4's are nonsense sometimes.

Once car is on hoist and things are happening, my mechanic is going to check into this possibility.
Will make the call after test fit etc...

A few things that I feel are unclear, or need correcting.

Did a 5MT to 6MT speed conversion on a 08/04 build date GT lib AUDM. So they were built in 04 AUDM Manual.

6 speed Should fit in any trans tunnel, looked at a few at the importer, and i honestly dont believe the mount points are different.
Subaru have never done this, auto/manual gearbox cross members always interchange. its the mount and config itself thats different.

From experience over last Christmas. Auto will not bolt straight into a manual tunnel unless a custom crossmember and dump pipe are used. 5sp manual and 6 SPD manual boxes use same mounting points. Auto completely different by 80mm
Here is photo proof it don't work.
