That's removing the calipers, to remove the rotors it's even simpler. There will be a threaded hole on the front of the rotor, simply use that in conjunction with a bolt and it will pop straight off

Won't the bracket that the caliper bolts onto stop you taking the rotor off?

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll definitely be doing the work myself. I'll only get the brake discs shaved. Might as well give my suspension and the wheel wells a clean at the same time.

Hey mate, my friend is the head mechanic/service manager for a big Toyota dealership here in Melbourne, like 12 or 18 hoists in their garage? And they send all their disks to be machined by a small machining shop, who are quote "the best" pro, and they only charge $60 for all four disks.
Suss out a shop like that near your place and you can't get better quality work, since it's like bread and butter for them. I can't find these guys anywhere on the net, they don't have a website, they probably get so much work from dealerships, they don't bother advertising, just registered in yellow pages - hence I said suss it out.

Well actually the caliper itself will stop the rotor from coming off. Do what you said first then what I said and wallah!

If you need the 4000 series rotors, you'll end up with surface cracks (putting holes in them weakens them - putting holes in any material weakens it).

Get slotted, but don't get drilled if you're doing it for performance reasons. Drilled on a street-driven car is pure wank.

Im glad you brought this up.. my friend told me the same thing about cross drilled rotors... but ive noticed that almost all performance cars M3's, Porsches, Veyron etc etc all use cross drilled rotors. Why are they the perfect choice for them and not for street cars?

P.s. not being a smart a**... i genuinely am interested to know what the answer is

Adam, my guess is that whilst they may be as effective if not more effective than slotted rotors in dissipating heat, their shelf life is probably quite reduced (given a fair few supercars I imagine would be driven hard/tracked etc) but then again a lot of serviceable parts on those types of cars have short shelf lives anyway (Ferrari clutches spring to mind...)

Supercars can afford to ride the harder line of better performance vs longevity

Bah, do you know how hard you have to go to crack a good set of drilled disks? You won't ever crack them on the street. If you do....uh you probably lost your licence already at some stage of your life?

And yes it's totally a wank factor. I thought that was the whole point of brembos?

Some super car manufacturers use ceramic rotors, your DD generally would use a steel rotor. Is ceramic harder/tougher?

Ceramics react to heat much much better then steel.

Yes ceramic is stronger generally. Of course it depends on what specs the material was made to/the manufacturer. Not to mention the carbon content and purity of the steel etc. Ceramic is also used for it's heat properties, not just strength.

Also drilling holes in a material does weaken it, but in a correct pattern - very slightly, it's trivial. Actually holes in a material can be used to strengthen it - when there is an existing crack. The hole stops the crack from propagating.

You need to look at the quality of the manufacturing process rather than just generalise.

I am gonna stick with my brake discs either way. Not looking at replacing them at all. The SpecB discs are big and strong enough for me I reckon. I am definitely gonna go for the DIXCEL type M's at the end of the day though guys, so these Hawk Performance Ceramics will be on hold for my next pads and I'll compare them.

We'll see how we go.

I should be buying the set within the next week hopefully.
