Tach sense wire MY07 GT-B pin location help.

Postby bigBADbenny » Wed Mar 13, 2013 1:25 pm

I have a gauge, an AEM Failsafe, that requires an (optional) rpm input.
This could also work for certain brands of shift lights that require a tachometer sense / signal input.

Researching an appropriate wire to tap into is proving to be challenging!
I've found the tach/RPM wire at the ECU but from my research a more successful approach is to use the cluster wiring.
Thus I believe the correct wire for tapping the tach/RPM signal is the one of many going into the green plug (i10) at the back of the cluster.
Big thanks to Moker who's successful SpeedoHUD install posts were invaluable for deciphering the WSM info.

Result: I'm fairly sure the correct wire is red/white to A20 on the i10 plug. (second pic of plug, third wire down)

^This is the detail from the cluster wiring system PDF that shows the pink RPM wire from the ECU leading to the red/white wire that goes into the cluster plug.

I just need to cross check with my MY07 WSM: these are from the MY08 WSM.

when we meet next Ben I'll show you how my rpm shift light is wired up, from memory it's still pink leading up to the dash, I can remove the cubby and show you....

Indeed I have found that wire and plug and will post pics for the common benefit.
I just went a little further as I wanted all bases covered. :P

Sorry to resurrect an ancient thread. Can you remember if it was the pink wire in the end Benny?

I've wired up this jaycar frequency switch to illuminate a little LED at a certain RPM to tell me when to shift. I used the pink wire but the signal on it is 7-8kHz at idle which much higher than the range of the freq switch (10-500Hz)

I would have thought at idle I'd see ~800rpm/60= 16Hz.

Actually dont worry, apparently it transmits rpm over canbus to the instrument cluster but there's an output pin on the ecu that'll give me rpm in Hz.

Nice one.
Let us know how it works out.
I’d love to install the bonkers chippernut sequential leds one day.
Plus the engine built for 9k rpm spark cut too :good:

Didn't have any joy coming straight out of the ECU but turns out you were actually on the money in your opening post. The red and white wire behind the instrument cluster is the one to use. Still tweaking the switching point but here she is in operation.

Love it :good:

Iirc pink was a wrx STi cluster rpm speed signal.
Either way the right colour will be in the FSM, wiring section probably.

Yes it’s in the FSM!
Link in my signature.
My07 audm or general market should work :)

May may I ask what particular aspect you need regarding the ecu?
