GenIII ej25 to ej20tt

Postby damo_ » Thu Feb 28, 2013 4:22 pm

Hey guys in need of some desperate advice!

So i have a GenIII n/a which has been giving me nothing but troubles over the last year and now ive done the head gasket... The engine has done just under 200,000kms. For overheating issues which get resolved then pop up 3 months later too a check engine light that never leaves me... Im fed up with it.

Do i pay the $$ to fix or do i buy another engine???

So a mate came up with the idea of putting an Ej20tt for a bit of fun  .. Has anybody done this and was it worth it. I can access to a Cheap B4 half cut but will i need to change diff, tailshafts etc etc

Any input would be amazing

cheers :good:

Worst idea in history.

Your mate is also an idiot  There is absolutely noone ever who has willfully thrown a TT cut into a car unless the genuinely never asked a soul first and realised they're terrible

If you want to make it reasonable, slap a V7+ STI half cut in. Turn key maybe 8-10k. If you do the bitch work yourself and someone sorts loom and pipes etc for you 7-8k.

Or pull the block, buy a subaru head gasket and seal kit, give the block faces and heads a tart up with a wire wheel and slap it all back together and sell it in favour of a turbo gen 1/2/3/4/bugeye onwards. Making an NA subaru reasonably fun isnt cheap. Making them fast is just stupid money. And playing with 4cyls...is kind of like pissing on a bushfire and expecting it to go out.

If you want to make it fast,

Dont get me wrong, you can do a hack job on it and throw in a cheap front cut. But most are underwhelming 2L things. A 2.5 block in a later halfcut heads and flog off the EJ207 is a good thing but a lot more cash.

But reality of the situation is a decent condition turbo liberty is 4-5k, a gen 3 with an sti cut maybe 10k. You'll spend a lot more to do it yourself. Seen many people in the same position and it usually ends up in understanding that nothing is cheap, and if you're paying for labour at all, its definitely not cheap.

Also should understand the prick that is engineering it. Depends where you are but it can be a right headf*ck using an older engine.
