GEN 3 2001 (Check engine light) has come on Help

Hi all, I have been away travelling for a bit so the Lib has sat idle for 3 weeks , it has been very hot here in perth, went for a quick drive last night since it sat idle and after 10 mins of driving the bright orange CHECK ENGINE LIGHT came on! It went out after 15 seconds and has done this twice now , Now Im no mechanic and a bit panic'y about it ,my hand book say's cars equipped with or with out OBD European model??? So the light hasnt Steadily come on or its not Blinking as suggested in the handbook after about 10 mins of driving it comes on for about 15 seconds then goes off ,it has done this twice in 24hrs, only on initial start up checks does the light come on but it goes out after start up , so please any help with regards to emission control system and what kind of $$$ am I up for as its just a second family car Thanks in advance Sandy

Petrol might have gone funny while it was sitting. I would use it up then fill it up with some 95 before taking it to a mechanic.

Double check with a mechanic but mines goes on and off all the time even for only a second but I think its due to my super hard coilovers lol I broke the filament in both headlights driving on a dirty road once :p

OK here we go again , my check engine light still keeps coming on but here's another one at exactly the same period my 2005 Hilux check engine light has come on aswell !! Have taken the engine apart on the lux as we thought it was injectors etc , took the truck into Toyota ,they plugged it in and said HMMMM never come across this before??? WT.... code 2008? Basically the Lux when going to overtake lets say go over 100kmh she goes into limp home mode dropping to below 2000 rpm and less than 60kms an hour , damn right dangerous when country driving, pull over turn engine off ,start again resets and she's fine until any excited throttle over 100kms she craps herself again and limp home mode?? As with my car the Lib it comes on every day going underneath freeway pass from Powis street!! Im yet to take mine to a mechanic but could it be CALTEX FUELS???? As we both fill up at the same Caltex!! Interested in your thought Peeps as its starting to p@#s me off ,especially when Toyota can't tell us what it is !!
Only K&N filter and 2.5 inch exhaust for engine mods on the Lux and NO engine mods with mine stock 2.5 just a cannon put on exhaust however I do put 98 premium in !! Keen on your comments ,cheers Sandy

I would try going to a different servo and fill with 91 and and then test and also on the lib does your engine light come on when your hitting bumps in the road and check to make sure you don't have a leaking head gasket or the like and is the radiator coolant look clean? ( that is why my enigne light comes on and then off 2 seconds later and then 5 mins down the road on again and the off for the rest of the way home!)

Ok update just had the codes read , Knock sensor. However the mechanic cleared the codes , drove 50 metres down the road now the engine light permenantly on and lack of power , car is running worse after the mechanic plugged the car in , should I go genuine subi part or good aftermarket sensor and can I do this myself cheers Sandy

Can try putting a thick washer between the block and the sensor - it acts to dampen the 'knock' the sensor picks up.
Apart from that, a new genuine one is like $120.

Mechanic #2 The best service by far Just a bloody long way from me but have offered to do closer to my house I will let him know
Friend #1 His cousin works at Subaru awaiting a price for the parts at mates rates ,
So as you can see very varied prices for the one part!

if you dont have long legs, you will need a milk crate to stand on. This is the location of the said item.

once you get it off the motor ( 12mm socket & long extension for socket set , disconnect plug ) there are some part numbers on it
