Front Suspension Knocking Noise

Postby LotusGT » Thu Jan 17, 2013 12:04 pm

Hello ,got a Liberty GT with about 110,00ks on board, no mods. Have already replaced the lower control arm bushes. Had a wheel alignment about 1 year ago. Now, at low speed you can hear a small knocking noise coing from the from suspension. Local mechanic has suggested it might be play in the strut tops, but then went on to say he couldn't really hear it on the test drive......

Any ideas what it may be? It's not evident at speed as there is too much going on by then to detect it. It happens most when nosing in / out of driveways where the vehicle speed is low and there is a rise or fall making the suspension compress. You are on the brakes at the time the noise is there, but I don't think it's brake related.

Common problem? Any ideas on hwere to start problem solving?

Thanks in advance.

It was the strut top mounts on my GT-B.

New parts = no more noise.

Thanks for the replies guys. It appears this is a common thing (sorry for no searchy) so I'll get it up on a hoist and have it checked out. Last mechanic that I spoke to said he suspect the suspension tops so he might be on the money. Take it to a dealer, general mechanic, or suspension shop to have it diagnosed?

Cheers.

The dealer I went to could not hear it. I ended up getting my GF to walk beside the car as it made the noise going down our driveway. She picked it was coming from the top of the suspension and not the bottom. Took a punt and got my local mech to replace the tops.
