3.0 engine rattle

Postby b120ute » Tue Jan 08, 2013 7:57 pm

i have a 3.0 my08 wagon with 87,000km on it and it has an annoying rattle coming from what sounds like the front of the engine which can only be heard
on idle when standing outside the car.

ive just replaced the bearings in both idler and tensioner pulleys as i thought they were the culprit but the noise is still there.

ive noticed that is doesnt rattle on cold start up but once warm its pretty noisy, although im unsure if its the fact that its cold that its not rattling
or because of the extra engine rpm on cold start.

im the second owner (bought it a month ago) and it has always been dealer serviced since new

any help/thoughts appreciated

Timing chain - mine does it too. My mechanic reckons it is nothing to worry about. But he could be wrong.

I have the same issue except mine is noticeable accelerating hard when the car is about to change gears. I think one of the chain tensioners might be on the way out or gone already. Seems to be a fairly common on H6 Outbacks Google tells me.

I get a quick rattle when punching the accelerator hard, or when throttling back on hard after a gear change. Sounds like pinging but stops quickly, Learning View shows no knocking.

i get the same rattle too, when I step on it, sounds like there is a small piece in the exhaust pipe smacking around, could it be a piece broken off the 1st cat, and now trapped between the 3rd cat?

It's most likely the exhaust heat shield. I've tried to remove some of the rusted bolts and failed, but in trying to do so, I've slightly bent the heat shields and it has reduced the vibration. I'm going to try and remove it completely today.

That's definitely not a heat shield. Good luck.

no mine doesnt sound like that at all

yours seems to be a consistent sound

mine is more a rattle that doesnt match the rhythm of the engine, if that makes sense

Nope...mine sounds more like when you change gears on a mountain bike or the sound you get pulling a chain on a roller door but obviously not as loud.

It's gotten worse the last few days no performance loss just annoying

I got a mechanic to look at it while my discs were being machined, he said its coming from inside the timing chain cover, so they'll need to take that off to have a better look. He said its nothing to "worry" about, just to get it checked out relatively soon just to be safe.
