Here's the filter, with fitment instructions written on the box ;-)
Pull out your stock filter, unplug & remove MAF, remove rear of air box, remove front of air box (2 bolts)...

I had this soft rubber door seal, although ancient, I needed extra double sided tape to stick it, it was in no way perished: perfect!!!

OEM vs HKS clean sides...

OEM vs HKS dirty side with my previous attempt at a neoprene seal... Better than nothing but the new one is on another level!

Get your door seal and carefully apply it around the edge of the rear hks filter holder, aping the seal on the stock filter.

If you're good you can get it even nicer than this!

Do the same on the front filter holder, then put some more around the back of that part that fits in in the dirty side of the air box.

Clean your air box parts carefully and clean the MAF with CRC MAF no residue cleaner.
Check the fit of the triple sealed filter. Refit parts, plugin MAF, recheck and drive!

Ben, and the benefit of this is....

I would imagine its pretty obvious.

The HKS filter DOES NOT seal properly against the engine side of the airbox allowing air/dust to bypass the filter dirtying your maf and entering your engine.

So I could install my led parkers, Bruce ;-)

The HKS is not airtight as supplied.
With my crappy neoprene gasket it was a little quieter.
But I read some oil analysis posts here...
Thus I want to avoid dust (silica) entering the engine long term.
I'd say the less required cleaning of the MAF the better too.
I also sealed the junction of the resonator as it was fairly loose.
Since I'm sticking with the stock intake for now I thought I'd optimise the HKS filter to work with it properly.
Furthermore I'd say the airflow across the rev range, at the velocity stack would be more consistent with a properly sealed filter.
I took the opportunity to rinse the filter in water, pummelling the dirt out and compressing it in a dry towel to dry it.
One less variable to interfere with my tune, too. ;-)

Thanks to cruisn for the original suggestion: it was a fun project for sure with so far tangible results.
The Lib feels even more sorted!

Thanks for the explanation guys, I've never had a HKS panel so wondered what the benefit was. I used to have the Apexi version, which sealed really well, like factory, prior to my Cobb SF intake. Didn't realise it wasn't the greatest seal on the very popular HKS.

Good work Ben!

I'm liking your little tweaks. :D

This is what happens if you don't do this and decide to drive on a dirt road.... Wasn't impressed.

Im actually very suprised that a Japanese made item from the likes of HKS doesnt come with a roll of seal tape and theres no mention of it in the fitting instructions either.

Very handy post Benny :good: did G88 tell you to seal or was it self discovery?

DIY triple sealed HKS air filter

Postby ndlibgt » Fri Jan 04, 2013 11:26 am

I too have done this as when Mark "Cruzin" fitted my dump we saw dirt on the engine side of the intake after the has panel. Definitely one too keep in mind if you have this panel.

Found this with some digging:

No rubber

im sure if the BIGGEST after market Japanese performance parts seller in the world thinks a rubber is needed they would have used one

Michael

I think I'd rather seal IMO...

It sounds great without a seal.
But lets in dust.
And I'd wager the airflow is less consistent.
So now a fix is described for all.
Probably just need to do the OEM location seal but I had extra seal to do it all!

If I want to get experimental & maybe noisier again ill make the snorkel with fly screen that replaces the resonator. :P

Apexi: also recommended by sh30rb ;-)

I think my MAF/IAM sensor shows it's needed, or that the filter material is absolute crap... It was clean (shiny metal part should be seen) before driving 3km on dirt...

Hoping I get a bit less noise as Ben said, starting to get sick of hearing the blow off valve...

Moving onto the suspension, steering and driveshaft bits next:
Just bought a 2ft breaker bar, 1/2"dr 32mm socket, 1/2" to 3/8"dr adapter...
Hoping my 3/8 sockets are up to it: I am!
