Rattle/mechanical noise under bonnet w/ video. FIXED

Hey guys,

Just after a bit of help or advice to what this noise could be.
It sounds like a quiet rattle from the outside, and its intermittent- not consistent.
I had a look under the bonnet and from what i can tell its coming from the right side of the motor, right near the oil cap.
With the bonnet open it sounds more mechanical than a rattle.

I've got a service coming up in the next couple of months, but if anyone has any ideas please let me know!
I've also attached a couple of photos of where i can hear the noise coming from.
If it makes any difference, its a 2005 3RB with 80xxx km's on the clock.

NOTE: the noise is only present when the car is idling under 2000-1500rpm.
And its in time with the RPM (obviously).
Is the timing belt inside the motor? it sounds like something going around and around or up and down.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Timing chain is behind the big arse metal cover at the front - PITA to do.

Uummmm shit..... Sort doesn't sound great!!!

Not big end like, but not great either!!

Is that the air con compressor at the front of the pic?? Maybe that is screwed internally?? Dunno

Eek, sounds like big end knock to me

cant take any on this as a diagnoises
but i would think one of the pulley bearings or something in the valve train (unsure how the AVC works but maybe something related to that
sound doesnt sound hollow/deep to be a big end but never know

Big end it's reference for the slipper bearing for the conrod to the crank they wear out with lack of oil orooil pressure
When they fail or wear out gives a thumping kind of knock/rattle sound

And the video audio makes it sound loud- it's not at all. It's only because the mic was so close to the source.
Can only hear it outside the car at idle.

I got a mechanic to look at it while my discs were being machined, he said its coming from inside the timing chain cover, so they'll need to take that off to have a better look. He said its nothing to "worry" about, just to get it checked out relatively soon just to be safe.

Timing chain tensioner is a common issue. they're often noisy. Replace it with a superseded part, all good.
