Auto gearbox: shifting between N and D

Postby tangcla » Thu Mar 13, 2008 10:22 am

Got a question for all you auto drivers.

Do you find that when you switch from N to D, it's quite harsh? I compared it to my mum's Accord Euro, and it's silky smooth - you can't even feel it engage into D, especially if you have your handbrake on with no foot brake.

Mine seems normal, but i just slap it into drive, i let the motion of the lever do the work, so it just slides in

I mean, do you feel 'drivetrain shock' when it shifts from N to D. The whole car bogs down and it squats...

have not noticed any 'bog down' when changing into D from N. Quite smooth actually.

AWD compared to FWD

not only does the trans have to kick in but the front and rear diffs have to lock as well hence you get the crunch sometimes.

if your going to launch the AUTO. left foot on the brake pedal and raise the power to a level where its on the verge of creeping fwd... then nail it simultaneously whilst removing the left foot.

That's what i do, left foot on brake, and right foot on accel, but does it do damage doing that? My bro was telling me, and i'm like serious

I think it's not too good for the torque converter.

Sorry, I meant the torque converter.

Got the term confused with torque converter, and high-stall torque converter, which allows you to hold the revs even higher for a super launch :D

The 5sp in mine is silky smooth... 8)

+1 on launch technique, left foot on brake, stall the torque converter, then floor the accel and release the brakes at the same time.
Only really do it when some tool at the lights in a falcon or commodore thinks they are top shit. bwahahaha
