Petrol Gauge and Speedo won't work.

Postby photog74 » Tue Oct 09, 2012 9:34 pm

Hi I was wondering if anybody could please help me out. I just brought a 1994 Subaru Liberty GX. The petrol gauge and the speedo don't work at all. I was wondering how I could fix this? It's frustrating not knowing how fast I'm going, plus how much petrol that I've got. If anybody has any idea about how I could fix this. Could you please let me know. Thanks. :x

Not to mention that's very much illegal...

I'd start with pulling the cluster out and ensuring that everything is connected properly. Give the plugs on the back of the cluster a wiggle and see what happens.

You can also go to a meter specialist and have them hook up a sine wave generator which simulates various speeds. They splice into the wiring and apply the signal to see if the meter is reading accurately. In your case, you just want to see if it does anything at all. If it does, then you know the problem is elsewhere.
I was going to procrastinate, but I put it off...

Have a look around on this web site or others and see if you can track down a wiring diagram. You may find it's a common fuse that's blown, or a loose connector, broken earth &c... If you still have the owners manual, you may be able to work out which fuse may be the suspect. Fuel gauge & speedo won't have much in common except common power supply which as Hyrax implied will come in through the shared connectors on the back of the cluster.

Has the car had anything electrical added, like a new stereo &c..? If so check stuff in that area to see if something dodgy has been done. I found a piece of solid core house wire used in my last car, just pushed in the back of connectors.
