Whining when on boost

Postby kennysti » Tue Oct 09, 2012 1:11 am

So I seem to have a whine that sounds sort of like a noisy supercharger when coming on boost. I only noticed it today, most recent mods have been new TMIC and silicone intake hose. I'm waiting to get in to my tuner to have a new turbo put on and a re tune since all the new mods though it has only been about a month since the cooler and hose went on. Anyone had this happen? Or might know whats going on?

Whining when on boost

Might just be a pre tune noise?

Could wait till after you get the tune and see if its still there..

Nah I can hear it with the windows up :? well if its the turbo that has problems it should be gone after the tune cos i'll be tuning with a new turbo anyway. Still another 2 ish weeks away from getting into the tuners though!

Have a good look for air leaks. No point going for a tune if the thing has problems. There are plenty of good threads on here for how to find leaks.
Kinda flush. Fitment is something. ADM as F*ck.

i had something similar before. i had an HKS panel filter in the airbox so i think they ecu learnt that it was there. then when i removed the filter to put the standard one back in i could hear a whining noise under load as if the engine was trying to suck excess air thru the shitty standard filter. also sounded like maybe the bit between the airbox and the turbo was maybe being sucked in/collapsing.

long story short, an ecu reset fixed the problem.

hope this helps :)

I currently have a whistling noise on boost.
My problem is a threaded bolt hole on one of the bolts that holds the bov to the intercooler, so air is escaping.

I will be attempting to fix it this weekend now that I have someone I can buy helicoils from and the time to do it.
Then I can get back to driving it full time.

If you just did FMIC make sure everything is connected properly and bolts are done up properly (not too tight though :)).

When jacksGTB and I put my new TMIC on I had a temporary problem with TMIC fitting the inlet hose, after taking it for a drive heard a whining sound. Went straight back and discovered that the hose wasn't connected and it was leaking. Hooked it up again and it's now good as gold.

go over all your hose clamps again it's either air escaping or just the noise of the turbo because the silicone intake is less restrictive and also less noise supression

hahahahahaha
I think you're hearing things.
the HKS filter will flow 4/5th's of fark all more air than stock filters to begin with.

yes the difference between a clean and dirty filter will have some tiny impact on the AF learning parameters of the ECU, but definitely nothing that would cause noises from trying to such extra air

there may be tiny noise differences between the two filters due to their shape and manufacturing materials, but nothing that will be magically be changed by resetting the ECU.

as for sucking in the airbox to turbo pipe, unless it's a sh!t quality single layer silicone one.. not gonna happen with different filters the only change.

hey..

can you upload a video of this happening?

as others said, check for air leaks.. i would look more at small hoses rather than cooler plumbing..
given these cars run AFM and not map sensors, any big gap in hoses, clamps etc.. will cause the car to run like arse.. if the car still runs fine and the only symptom is a noise.. i would look elsewhere..

Why are you replacing your turbo?

I ask because what you described to me sounds like a damaged impeller blade.. my old supra had an almost identical issue.. i replaced the intake hose to mine and the new one had a tiny fault.. a bit of the silicone snapped off and went through my turbo.. only chipped a couple of blades, but it's more than enough to make lots of noise.. it sounds like you are running a stupid amount of boost..

If you are ever around the Vic Park area im happy to have a listen..
STI lip, Whiteline suspension goodies, KIDO tune.. more to come..

hhmmm...interesting response as i consider you one of the smarter people on this forum.

im just putting in my experience as i think it may be beneficial to the OP or anyone else that searches this topic in the future.

i was returning my car (my07 gt-b) to stock (to sell it) and i had swapped my phat dump with a standard one and everything was fine and then about a week later i swapped the HKS filter for standard and that was when the noise (under load only) started. the noise continued until i reset the ecu a couple of days later and voila, the noise had gone. as if a sponge wouldnt flow a considerate amount more air than a a few layers of slightly perforated paper.

i mention the airbox to turbo pipe collapsing cos thats what happened in my old 180sx after changing from standard t25 to a ball bearing t28. that also had a very similar sound. in the case of the liberty, its still the standard airbox to turbo pipe, which has corrugation in the bends which could also produce a weird sound or compress when lots of air is being sucked thru it.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions guys! I did find the cause and it was because of a stripped thread on the compressor outlet connecting to the intercooler thus not making a tight seal. It was only tiny but enough to hear the gasket vibrating and causing a weird whine.

Stomps I'm going for a bigger turbo, which will be installed and tuned this Friday, I'm only running 16psi on the standard though. I'm hoping for a daily 18 on the new turbo though
