Rattle in roof

Postby Rosso » Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:24 pm

Hi guys & gals,

Just got back from a bit of a road trip & noticed this awful rattle coming from the sunroof/roof. The rough roads here in mt isa dont help much either.

Has anyone experienced this before & if so could you get it repaired & what caused it? Under warranty im assuming?

I could easily take it to my local dealership in town but ive had a few altercations with them & dont want to leave my car in their unprofessional care, also freshly back from a holiday i wont be able to take my car to the next closest dealership (which is an 8hr drive away) any time soon.

Ill most probably end up putting up with it till my next trip out of town, but if there's anyone out there who has encountered this problem, could you tell me if it can be repaired easily by myself or should i just leave it to the professionals.

Thanks All :)

Ric, could you please move this to the most appropriate section. Thanks :D
Cheers,

Rosso.

Apparently it's caused by lack of lubricant in the rails. It's shitting me. Subaru's looked at it a few times and though they say they've fixed it - it's not.

Make sure you get any body rattles fixed by the dealer within the first year of warranty otherwise Subaru will not cover it.

Thank god! I thought it was just me!

I had this problem from the beginning. Took it back to servies 3 times. All times they couldnt hear anything. I seems to come and go.

I now drown it out by pumping up my stereo.

I now close the sunroof blind. Rattle goes away.

I'm going to start a new thread regarding rattles :P

Ok so i took the roof lining down today & BOOYAH!!! i found my rattle.

No amount of lubricant could have fixed this sucka, reason being - a bolt holding the drivers side sunroof rail had vanished.

Now im pretty sure that i heard a rattle coming from behind me somewhere whilst driving & im thinking that could be the missing bolt. Ill save searching for that another day.

Anyway, got a new bolt & fixed my rattle, heres some pics-

This shot shows the rail with the missing bolt

This is what it should look like

Heres me pushing on the rail which is the cause of the rattle

hmm, interesting! How hard is it to take the roof trim off? I'm scared that it won't go back on properly if I take it off

I had the pleasure of a workshop manual which showed me step by step how to do it.

I downloaded it from somewhere on www.ozliberty.com

So with the workshop manual, quite straightforward?

ANything tricky about removing the trim, i.e. clips that will break, etc?

Yeah its pretty simple, no clips broke for me.

Just gotta take all the sunvisors, handles & lights first, then remove the pillar trim. this is the hardest part although something might have broke if i didnt know how to undo some of the different clips :?
